Star Gazing
August 9, 2000
"And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is." (Ephesians 3:
18 NLT)
It cost a million dollars, drew consultants from around the globe, and required FAA security. Nope, not the Olympics. Nor the presidential primaries. I'm
talking about the wedding of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.
Inconsequential in the grand scheme of things? Definitely (except to them, of course!). Yet does it still trigger my voyeuristic curiosity? You bet!
So the last time I was in the grocery store check-out aisle, I joined the
hoardes who snagged a copy of the People magazine Brad and Jennifer graced,
hoping for a peek at Jennifer's dress, a glimpse at the celebrity-filled
guest list, and a description of all the chi-chi grandeur. Hey, if I can't
have a wedding of my own, why can't I vicariously enjoy someone else's?
While I was appalled at the price tag, the security hijinks, and the quotes from friends and family saying this star-studded event had "a most un-Hollywood
vibe," there was one detail that stuck out to me. Fireworks.
Apparently after the ceremony and before the Greek dancing, Brad treated
Jennifer to a pyrotechnic display of his love. As I was reading about this
part of the festivities, I'll admit I was impressed. Not with the fact that
these lovebirds could afford such an extravagance, but with the desire to
fill the sky with your excitement and love for someone. Wow! Wouldn't it
be amazing to be on the receiving end of love so big?
As soon as that thought filled my head, I realized there was something familiar about the whole concept. Later that night, gazing up at the evening stars,
I got it. In the stillness of the night air, I sensed God whispering, "Don't
you know I fill the sky with stars for you every night?" Tears filled my
eyes as I stood marveling at the sparkling, unrivaled display and reveling
in my Creator's love for me.
So, my single sisters and brothers, let this be a reminder that you are loved desperately, constantly, and on a grander scale than we and even Brad
and Jennifer and their well-paid consultants can ever imagine. If you're
ever tempted to doubt it or forget, simply join me in my new favorite pastime:
star-gazing.
Blessings!
