Today's Christian, March/April 2000

"I will walk.  It's only two miles … "

What does God's care look like?

One time, for me, it resembled Joseph.

Joseph was from China, and he was a student at a seminary in Seoul, South Korea, where my husband and I were living and working. Joseph had a dream to see his entire country hear about God's love.

One cold, February afternoon I met Joseph coming out of the gate of the seminary as I was going in. He was carrying a large bundle, headed toward the heart of the city.

"Joseph, where are you going on such a cold day with such a big bundle?" I asked.

"I'm taking your mail to the post office," he answered with a smile that stretched across his entire face. "I do it every other day. Not just your mail but everyone's."

I was surprised. I had no idea how my letters and packages ever got to the post office after I'd laid them on the secretary's desk. But now I got the picture.

Every international student at the seminary had received certain scholarship money in return for daily chores. Joseph's assignment was apparently delivering the mail to the post office.

"You're catching the bus at the corner?" I asked.

"Oh no, Mrs. Senter," he said, still flashing his wide, shy smile. "I will walk. It's only two miles to the post office. I'll be back in a couple of hours."

He turned and trotted off down the narrow street, his slight frame bent forward, as though riding the wind, carrying my load for me.

The image has never left me.

When I'm feeling weighed down by my burdens, I see myself laying it all on the corner of the secretary's desk. And here comes Joseph. Picking up my mail, taking on the weight of all my packages, willingly, yes even, gladly. And I understand the apostle Peter's words in a new way: "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you" (1 Pet. 5:7, KJV).
