Today's Christian, March/April 2000

Our children's church program recently finished a series on Jesus' miracles. The teacher asked if the children had a favorite. My five-year-old son Brendan shot up his hand.

"I liked it when Jesus healed the ten leprechauns!"

—Ginny Sullivan
Fairfax, Virginia

All was still as we were observing Communion at our small church. Suddenly our three-year-old granddaughter Bonnie exclaimed for all the congregation to hear, "We're having a picnic!"

The minister took it in stride, "Praise the Lord! Yes, we are having a picnic with Jesus."

—Helen Wright
College Corner, Ohio

My daughter-in-law frowned at her younger son Billie as he reached for the pie plate. "Why do you always reach for the largest piece?" she asked. "Don't you think your brother should have it sometimes?"

"No," said Billie, scooping up the big piece. "He was eating pie four years before I was born."

—Thomas LaMance
Prewitt, New Mexico

Only 13 months apart in age, my two youngest brothers are nearly inseparable. After learning to write his name, Estynn thought he should share this knowledge with his little brother Ethynn.

Imagine our surprise when Ethynn walked into the kitchen with Estynn's name clearly printed in green marker across his forehead. Stifling our laughter, we asked Estynn why he'd done this to his little brother. His simple three-year-old response was merely, "He let me."

—Wendy Baker
Grover Hill, Ohio

My four-year-old niece Christine loved to count. But she was frustrated by her older sister who would sit at the piano, counting time, "One, two, three, four; one, two, three, four … "

Exasperated, Christine cried, "One, two, three, four, FIVE!"

—Helen Williamson
Newbury Park, California

Two weeks before I was to baptize my oldest son, my wife and I were explaining the significance of the event to him.

As we talked, we noticed our four-year-old had slipped out of the room. When I found him, he was visibly upset.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

Nearing tears, he wailed, "I want to be alphabaptized with my brother."

—Gary Reeves
Rincon, Georgia

We had just returned from church where we'd heard an inspiring message on the abundance of God's blessings. As we sat down to lunch, my wife said, "Later, we all need to go to the store."

Not missing the opportunity, my five-year-old son Zack asked, "Can I get a toy?"

"No," I said. "You have enough toys."

Zack responded, "But the pastor said God wants us to have more than enough."

—Tim Dumas
Yukon, Oklahoma

During his Bible college days, my husband Mike drove the church bus each Sunday morning. Our two daughters and I rode along.

One morning, five-year-old Monica exclaimed, "Mama, those people have a dog!"

Still groggy, I answered absentmindedly, "They do? How nice."

"I know the dog's name."

"You do? That's neat."

"Yes," she persisted. "His name is Beware—the sign on the fence says so."

—Sandra McGarrity
Chesapeake, Virginia

Benjamin, my husband's five-year-old nephew, was excited to be ringbearer at our wedding. After explaining his role and answering his questions, we were sure he knew what to expect.

However, one concern was voiced by Ben to his grandmother who was making his outfit. "Grandma," he said, "be sure to make holes in my bear suit, so I can see where I'm going."

—Suzanne Harvey
Mbu, Nigeria
