Today's Christian, July/August 2000

Josh, 4, was visiting his grandfather and me. I told him he could have either cereal, pancakes, or waffles for breakfast. He thought a moment, looked up at me, and asked, "Did you say cookies?"

During a stay with grandparents, my 5-year-old niece Michaela pulled corn on a neighbor's farm for the first time. Her grandparents used the experience as a teaching tool, explaining to Michaela that the corn was God's blessing to them.

At first, the work was great fun, but after only a few minutes Michaela looked at her grandmother and commented, "You know you can buy this in the grocery store, don't you?"

Recently, I tried something different in our worship service. Instead of preaching at the end, I did it first, with music, the offering, and Scripture reading afterward.

As I stood behind the pulpit, I could see people getting ready for the offering, until they realized I was starting my message.

Caitlyn, a first grader in the congregation, was perplexed by this change of routine, and whispered frantically to her mom, "Doesn't he know we haven't paid him to talk yet?"
—Gordon Wood
Ellison Bay, Wisconsin

Grandpap had two dogs, Holly and Louie. One time when our son Matt, then three years old, visited his grandfather, he heard him shouting, "Holly! Louie!"

Matt observed, "We sing that song in church."
—Dan and Debbie Gibson
North Royalton, Ohio

As we drove home from church one afternoon, we were happily talking about a friend who was presented as a candidate for baptism that day. As we were saying how proud we were of him, my three-year-old daughter Elizabeth asked, "What does it mean to be baptized?"

My five-year-old son Joshua spoke up, "Oh, baptism, that's when the preacher washes all your senses away." Of course, we laughed all the way home.
—Patty Meredith
Bernie, Missouri

Several boys were trying to learn James 4:7 during children's church. The teacher wanted the boys to read the verse on their own but agreed to assist them with the harder words. Brennan accepted the challenge and tackled the first word. But instead of "submit," Brennan said "sidewalk."

"Think of another 's' word, Brennan," the teacher prompted.

"Cement!"

" 'Cement' yourselves to God. Resist the devil and he will flee." Not a bad rendering.
—Donna Holland
Redfox, Kentucky

Jenny, our four-year-old, was staying with her grandparents. On Sunday, which happened to be Grandpa's birthday, they went to church.

The church was larger than the one we usually attend, and candles on the altar were something new for Jenny. After staring at them, she exclaimed in her high-pitched voice for all to hear, "Grandma, are those candles up there for Grandpa's birthday?"
—Jewell Johnson
Fountain Hills, Arizona

My four-year-old son Ashton loves the movie Toy Story 2, particularly the space ranger hero Buzz Lightyear.

Recently in Sunday school we were learning that God's love has no limits. At the end of class, the teacher, reviewing the lesson, asked, "So, how much does God love us?"

Quoting Buzz's big line in the film, Ashton replied, "To infinity and beyond!"
