Kids of the Kingdom

Driving through rural central California, my eight-year-old son Luke, my wife Sue, and I were enjoying the scenery until we came upon a herd of dairy cows blocking the road. The sides of the road were too muddy to drive through, and no amount of honking the horn, revving the engine, or flashing the lights had any effect on the bovines. They stood there, unmoving and uncaring.

Finally, my son rolled down the window, stuck his head out, and yelled, "Moo-o-o-ove!"

He must have been speaking their language; they obeyed his command.

—Alan Davis
Belleville, Wisconsin

Returning from church my daughters were comparing what they'd learned in Sunday school. My oldest daughter, Miranda, 10, regaled her sister Mackenzie, 5, with the story of Queen Esther. Mackenzie loved the story but couldn't understand why Esther was afraid to approach the king.

Miranda thought a moment and confidently replied, "Well, it's not like it is now. Back in those days men were important." —Ralph Rowland Kirkland, Washington

One day, at the daycare where I work, a two-year-old girl sneezed on her little friend. The victim of this indignity came to me, pointed at the girl, and said, "Her bless on me."

—Ruth Lucius
Tucker, Georgia

We were at my mother's house organizing old books. To keep three-year-old Joshua busy, I let him watch a children's nature show on TV.

When the show ended, Joshua found us and announced, "Mom, guess what? Dinosaurs are extinct."

Proud of my precocious son, I exclaimed, "Wow, that's right!"

"Joshua, do you know what extinct means?" my mom asked.

"I think it means they smelled really bad."

—Elizabeth Coleman
Tumwater, Washington

Cleaning out my basement, I found a box of staples that my father had used in his office. My parents had divorced 25 years earlier, so the box was at least that old. I gasped as memories rushed to mind.

"What is it?" asked my three-year-old nephew Chase, who was helping me.

"Just memories," I said, thinking he was too young to understand. I soon realized he understood perfectly. When he found an old doll in a chest, he exclaimed, "Look, Aunt Cindy, more remember-ies!"

—Cindy Baker
Annapolis, Maryland

A few days after I brought home my surprise twins from the hospital, I was exhausted. Life had become an endless parade of feedings and changings.

One afternoon, I dressed the babies and snipped off their hospital identification bands. Suddenly terror gripped me. Who was who? I stared at the infants and asked God for help. Just take off their diapers was his gentle answer.

I was so tired I'd forgotten that boy-girl twins aren't exactly alike.

—Linda Clare
Eugene, Oregon

My son Steve, 13, came home from school and told me the Gideons had handed out New Testaments.

"It was really something," he told me. "During lunch, the kids sat around the cafeteria reading the book of 'Revolutions.'"

—A. Louise Willard
Lakeland, Florida

Since my five-year-old son Jeff had a speaking part in our church's Easter program, I decided to buy him his first suit. We left it at the store to be altered.

When my husband came home that night, Jeff was bubbling over with excitement about his new outfit. When my husband asked to see it, Jeff said it was being "ordained."

"No, dear," I corrected him, "it had to be altered."

"That's right," Jeff replied. "I knew it had something to do with church."

—Hester Jones
Warrenville, South Carolina
