Kids of the Kingdom

Throughout the sermon, our three-year-old son, David, sat unusually still, listening enthralled to the stories of David and Goliath, David and Jonathan, David and his mighty victories in battle.

During a dramatic pause in the sermon, David's awe-struck stage whisper carried throughout the sanctuary as he asked my husband, "Daddy, when did I do all that?"

Lindsey was a four-year-old in my wife's Sunday school class. At the end of the lesson on Creation, my wife, Sherrie, asked, "Who made the earth?"

"God," a chorus of voices replied.

"And who made the sun?" Sherrie prompted.

The reply was unanimous. "God!"

"And who made the stars?"

Everyone responded with "God"—except for Lindsey. At the top of her voice, she said, "Grandma!"

When Sherrie ran through the questions again, once again Lindsey insisted that it was her grandma who made the stars, not God.

Not long after, Sherrie saw Lindsey's grandmother and mentioned the curious exchange. The first words out of her mouth were, "Well, my stars!"

My five-year-old grandson, Tyler, was looking forward to starting kindergarten until he saw a video in which a young boy was caught and punished for cheating. For several days, Tyler voiced his concern about going to school. His parents assured him that if he obeyed his teacher and didn't copy another child's work, he would have no problem.

The day before he started kindergarten, Tyler ran to his mother, excited and quite pleased. "Mommy, it's okay. I know I can't cheat!" he exclaimed. "I can't cheat because I don't know how to write!"
