Big Screen Vision
The producer of Elf shares the Christian hope that drives his filmmaking.

Todd Komarnicki is a writer and producer whose latest film, Elf, is now showing in theaters. Christian Reader spoke to him about filmmaking, faith, and a 35-year-old man who was raised by elves.

Why should people see Elf?
Elf is a beautiful story of a misfit discovering that his uniqueness is not a hindrance but a joy, both to himself and to others. Will Ferrell plays a human who, after sneaking into Santa's sack at the orphanage where he was being raised, winds up in the North Pole. He grows up thinking he's an elf, despite the obvious dissimilarities. People should see Elf because it's a story of how the power of love and light can infuse darkness with hope.

What's it like being a Christian producer in Hollywood?
Getting any movie made in Hollywood is so difficult. They all feel like miracles once they actually hit the screen. As the owner of a production company, I can dictate the kind of scripts we go out with, so I avoid films that add to the deluge of confusion we already have in the culture. We try to develop stories that first and foremost tell the truth. That doesn't mean they're all sunshine and flowers. There are hard truths we all need to face, as well. But that's my biggest barometer—telling the truth, because we have a Savior who literally is the truth. So I feel the best way to honor him is to tell stories with the deepest level of honesty.

Is there any hope for producing an authentically "Christian" film in Hollywood today?
I can only speak for my own journey and my attempt to glorify God in what I do. I feel my job is to "cast my bread upon the waters" and seek God's will. And I always remember that God is stronger than the culture, and when he desires something to come to pass, it will.
