Remembering Iran's Quake Victims
Quick Takes on people, news & reviews
Iran continues to reel from the deadly earthquake that devastated the ancient city of Bam late last year. When the final body is unearthed, the official death toll could exceed 30,000. The horrific catastrophe, which registered 6.7 on the Richter scale, has already gone down as the worst earthquake since 1990, when Iran endured a quake that killed more than 40,000 people. Adding to the tragedy are the victims who survived the quake only to die from exposure to the cold temperatures because they had no shelter.
Many members of Iran's persecuted Christian community were on the front lines in the effort to help victims of the December 26 quake. And as mass burials inundated the beleaguered city, the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) mobilized local evangelical churches to respond to the spiritual, physical, and material needs of communities in the Bam area.
CRWRC executive director Andrew Ryskamp said he saw an "opportunity to witness" the love of Christ to victims "in a powerful way" in the predominantly Muslim nation. And according to Ryskamp, many people have shown an interest in the gospel.
Ryskamp's ministry is not the only Christian relief organization reaching out in Bam. See the box on this page for a list of just a few of the evangelical groups that you can support as they bring spiritual and material aid to the people of Iran.
"Unfortunately, devastating earthquakes are a regular occurrence in Iran," said one Iranian Christian leader from the scene. "It is also extremely sad that the world will soon forget the victims."
Let's make sure the church doesn't forget.
