Kids of the Kingdom
Wit and wackiness from the mouths of babes.
From our readers
My 4-year-old grandson was staying with me a few days before Christmas. I read him the Christmas story and mentioned how happy everyone felt that Jesus was born, and that angels even appeared to tell everybody the news. I drew the parallel of how happy we all had been several weeks earlier when his new baby sister was born. "Yeah," Nicholas responded, "but there aren't any angels in this town!" Sue Miholer, Salem, Oregon
"My daughter and son-in-law were riding along, listening to a local pastor on the radio. Seated in the back was their 4-year-old, Kaci. The pastor happened to mention the word "sin." After a few moments, Kaci asked, "Mommy, what's sin?" Her mother tried to explain, "It's things like lying and not obeying your parents." After a few minutes of silence, Kaci bluntly said, "Mommy, I sin sometimes." Van Morris, Mt. Washington, Kentucky
I'm a pastor, and it's our family's usual routine on Sunday mornings for my 7-year-old son Clayton and I to leave for church early. My wife Laura then meets us there later. When we were halfway down our street one morning, I realized I had forgotten my sermon. I turned the car around and pulled into our driveway. I asked Clayton, "Would you mind running inside and telling your mom that I need my sermon? It should be on my desk. And tell her to be sure she gives you all four pages." Clayton hesitated for a moment and then said, "Dad, your sermons have been kind of long lately. Can I only get three pages?" Tom Engel, New Albany, Indiana
A friend of mine took her two young grandchildren to a Christmas pageant last winter. When the birth of Jesus unfolded onstage, the makeshift manger scene featured a live infant instead of the usual plastic doll. My friend's granddaughter Lydia, who was 3, pulled on her grandmother's sleeve excitedly and said, "Look Grandma, Jesus is real!" Kim Carter, Jacksonville, Illinois
