Kids of the Kingdom
Wit and wisdom from the mouths of babes.
From our readers

Cross Talk
On Easter Sunday a few years ago, a friend and I were discussing a new cross I was wearing. My son Andrew, about 10 at the time, saw that my friend was also wearing a cross. "So, you wear one too?" he said. "Oh yes," she answered, "and I carry one in my pocket all year through." To which Andrew quickly replied with a twinkle in his eye, "So, does that mean you're a double crosser?"

Green Peace?
My 4-year-old daughter Laura asked me to sing her a new lullaby at bedtime. With great expression but minimal vocal skill, I began singing "Let There Be Peace on Earth." As I sang, I became more and more emotional, hopeful that I would convey the message of Christ's peace and love for all of us. I finished the song and turned to Laura with expectation, but she did not look peaceful at all. Nor did she look sleepy. Rather, she looked confused. "Mommy," she asked, "am I the only one on the earth who does not like peas?"

Hair-Raising Moment
My 3-year-old daughter was restless in church. Having used her allotment of toys and books, she began twirling the blonde hair on my arm. It was distracting and annoying. After a moment or two, I said, "Don't, Katie, that hurts." She looked up with a sad expression in her big brown eyes. "I'm sorry, Mommy—I didn't mean to pull your fur."

   —Connie Pettersen, Aitkin, Minnesota

Hail to the Leaf?
I was sharing the biblical story of Moses with my 3-year-old son Carson. As I read the children's book to him, we came to the part where God speaks to Moses by means of a burning bush. Carson was wide-eyed in wonder as he asked in almost a whisper, "Mommy, was it George Bush?"
