 Today's Christian, January/February 1997
While I conducted my usual Tuesday evening prison ministry, my wife decided to attend a local home sales party. Our fifteen-year-old daughter, Faith, was at home and later told us about a call she had taken from one of our church members. It went like this:
"Hello, is your father home?"
"No, he's in jail," Faith said.
"Well, then, is your mother home?"
"No, she's at a party."
The church member still reminds us of that call.

On one of my pastoral visits, I had just stepped inside a hospital elevator and punched the button for the fifth floor when a young pregnant woman slipped in beside me.
Noticing she glanced at the button panel, but didn't press a button for another floor, I asked, "Number five?"
"Heavens no!" she gasped. "It's only my first!"

One day at our weekly Bible study, our class leader, a Canadian now living in Florida, asked a shyer member of our group to read the Scripture. After a flawless recitation, Ernie encouraged her, "That was very good, Rebecca. I'll give you an 'A' for that."
To which someone else responded light-heartedly, "Oh, Ernie, you give everyone an 'eh'!"

As song leader for my church in New Hampshire, I was preparing for Sunday. I planned on playing my guitar, but my electronic tuner was missing. Maybe I left it in the car, I thought.
Heading to the garage, I asked the Lord out loud to help me find my "tuner."
Nothing was on the back seat of the car, but when I reached under the front seat out rolled a can of tuna.
My husband followed my laughter to the garage. "Honey," I said, "The Lord definitely heard my prayer-New England accent and all."

The other day I caught myself mumbling, "I hate these No Expiration Date coupons. You can never throw them away."
