The Amazing Mouse House
A real-life parable
by Jane M.D. Osinski

The summer heat sapped my energy. Thank heaven we stored our air conditioner when we went overseas, I thought. But now we needed it.

I called the installer. "You say it was in storage eight years?" he said dubiously. "I've never seen one stored that long without rust damage. You'll probably have to buy a new one. But I'll come."

My heart dragged. Our recent move had depleted our funds. "See what you can do," I said.

A few hours later, the serviceman knelt on the floor in front of the unpacked air conditioner. Removing the cover, he whistled, then shook his head. "Never saw anything to beat it," he said.

"Oh, well," I said, waiting to hear the bad news. "I won't melt."

"You sure won't lady." Pushing his hat back, he sat on his heels and grinned. "God sent you a mouse."

I peered inside the air conditioner. Shredded paper was jammed in every available space, nested there by a mouse. "What a mess!" I said.

"Ma'am, that mess saved you a bundle. This thing is so full of paper it doesn't matter that the motor wasn't bolted down properly. It can't move. Not only that, the mouse family licked all the moisture off the coils. There isn't a spot of rust anywhere. All you need is coolant and you're ready to go."

Fifteen minutes later I listened to the hum of our air conditioner. Thanks, God, for helping me in an unexpected way. And to the mice in the house, wherever they were hiding, I made a promise never to set any traps again.
