When purchasing a gift certificate for her daughter, my best friend Cheryl told the clerk that it was for Sarah, with an "h." She was given a certificate for "Hsara."

I work in a music store and frequently have to field strange requests from the confused parents and grandparents of young music students. Our most frequently asked question: "Who wrote the lyrics to the Lord's Prayer?"

The outreach to the hearing-impaired in our church, Hope Chapel, has always been well-received. Many young people have learned the art of signing.
One evening at church, my friend Frannie and I sat waiting for a renowned guest speaker to begin, when two enthusiastic young adults sat down in front of us. They began practicing their signing to one another, calmly at first, but then their hands and arms began to flail about as the conversation grew more exciting. The guest speaker began, but their silent conversation continued.
Finally, in a fit of frustration, my friend leaned forward, tapped the duo on the shoulders, and said, "Excuse me. I hate to interrupt, but would you two please BE QUIET!"

As a young pastor in his first assignment in a rural California church, I worked with an 89-year-old organist, Mary Rose. During the sermon she sat on a small chair beside the organ, waiting for the closing hymn. One sultry Sunday, I paused in the midst of my message and asked the somewhat listless congregation, "Are you awake out there?"
To my complete surprise, Mary Rose lurched forward and gasped, "Oh, I'm sorry, Pastor, I only dozed off for a minute."

While my husband was working a temporary job in a large hardware store, he coined a motto to encourage customer service and satisfaction:
Go the extra aisle.
