Today's Christian, September/October 1998

One Sunday, in the midst of my church's building program, the pastor made an announcement before the worship service. As he looked at the gymnasium full of people sitting in pews from the old sanctuary, he said, "We have all the money we need to complete our project." A brief silence was followed by cheers and applause.

"There is just one problem," he continued. "Some of it is still in your pockets."

After a few moans and some laughter, the service began.

My mother-in-law's friend purchased a time-controlled oven when they first came onto the market. She didn't trust the oven, but decided to try it one Sunday when guests were coming for dinner. She set the timer and went to church.

She fretted all through the ser-vice. "What if the oven doesn't come on, and the potato scallop doesn't cook?"

When she got home, she opened the front door and sniffed. "I knew it," she said. "I don't smell a thing."

After a few minutes in the kitchen, she discovered what happened. The oven was definitely hot, but the potato scallop was still in the refrigerator.

I was pastoring a mission church in Maine where most of the congregation were new Christians. At a men's prayer meeting one evening, I invited those present to share matters for praise and thanksgiving.

One young man had recently been through some financial problems and taken out a consolidation loan at his credit union. With un-abashed gratitude, he joyfully announced to the group, "I want to praise the Lord tonight because I was finally able to borrow enough money to get out of debt."

Several minutes later—after we all had regained our composure—we joined him in praising the Lord!
