When I Became an Adult, I Learned to Worry
By Ruth Senter
When I was a child I used to sing: "Be not dismayed whate'er betide. God will take care of you." When I was a child, the words to that song were easier to believe. When I became an adult, I learned to worry.
Today, enroute from Korea back to the United States, I find myself worrying. About what? Well, about the fact that I have never traveled through the busy airport in Osaka, Japan, before. That I must navigate customs on my own. That I have to change flights and don't have much time for getting lost. That I don't know Japanese and not all signs include English.
All the way across the East Sea, I worry. In between, I do notice the distant haze of land, stretching like a sleeping tiger. Then the white sprawl of a city, coming closer all the time.
We land, disembark, and I be-gin my navigation through the terminal maze, following the crowd that seems as lost as I feel. I do not see any signs in English. Just then I hear words I recognize: "Are you looking for the way to customs?"
I turn and face a family, in line directly behind me. I can tell they are Westerners, and it is not long until I learn they are missionaries from Korea, traveling to Hawaii. I feel I have instant family. We know the same places in Korea and even some of the same people back in the United States. We talk all the way through customs, then the missionary family point me in the direction of my gate. They have traveled this airport often and they know.
As I settle into my seat for the long flight back across the Pacific, I think of the song of my childhood. "God will take care of you." Today has been just one more example. And then I wonder why God's children tend to worry so.
