Left Behind series author Jerry B. Jenkins often jokes that he's the most famous writer nobody's heard of. Untrue. Just mention the phenomenally successful New York Times best-selling books he cowrote with Tim LaHaye and heads everywhere nod in recognition. The Mark (Tyndale), this series' newest addition, lands in stores November 14, and Left Behind the movie will be released to video October 31. Jerry's also recently released Though None Go with Me (Zondervan).
But his most impressive success? Jerry Jenkins, alias Jerry Bruce, was TCW's first editor more than 22 years ago! Jerry was taking a breather from writing when TCW caught up with him.
Why is Left Behind so successful?
It's the great writing. Kidding! I think the timing's right. People are interested in spiritual things, and the truths in these books come straight from the Bible. Tim LaHaye and I get many letters from people who tell us they made a commitment to God because they read our books. That's humbling.
How can you write for women so realistically?
I guess I'm in touch with my feminine side! Actually, being married for 29 years to Dianna has taught me a lot. As a writer, I try to get into the mind of the charactersbut I don't claim to fully understand women.
What can we learn from your masculine side?
A husband's biggest ego boost is to show you're proud of him. A man loves a simple gesture of affection, such as holding his hand or putting your arm around him in church. You may even get your husband to do the dishes once in a while!
