I Resolve To …
December 29, 2000

I remember when I used to sit down before the New Year and make a resolution list. Sometimes, I'd start the list in the summer. Other times the clock would ring midnight on New Year's Eve and I'd quickly make one up. I can't really remember what I resolved to do all those times. Once my goal was to win the mile run at the state track meet. I also was determined to have a washboard stomach in time for Spring Break. And I think at one point in time, I even tried to ban chocolate from my diet.

My resolutions were not only unrealistic, they were virtually unattainable. I was an above average runner, but definitely not stellar. And having a washboard stomach? I wasn't willing to spend eight hours a day doing sit-ups. The chocolate idea was just a phase I was going through, not anything to take seriously. Besides, I couldn't give up sneaking chocolate chip cookie dough from my mom's mixer.

The list of my insignificant resolutions could go on for a while. Looking back, I made resolutions like I made wishes. I'd throw them into a wishing well and hope they'd come true. I didn't want to have to work hard to make it happen.

In James, it says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything" (1:2-4).

When I was preparing my life-changing list, I didn't consult God. Frankly, I just wanted my resolutions to come true, but I wasn't willing to devote the time and energy needed to accomplish them.

God wants us to persevere. It builds character, it sustains us, it gives us the ability to watch our dreams unfold. Now, how does any of this apply to your resolution list? Well, it all goes back to your determination. If you decide you want to be diligent in your quiet times next year, go to God, and ask for his help. If you want to be state champ in the hurdles, set up a workout plan and training schedule. Just be sure you're always talking to God about your desires.

New Year's resolutions are a great excuse to start over with a clean slate. But, I can't remember the last resolution I made on New Year's Eve. I now make them all throughout the year. I figure if I ever resolve to do anything, I might as well start right there and then.

And about my past resolutions? No, I didn't win the mile at the state meet, but I did place in the conference. Even after countless amounts of sit-ups, I don't think a washboard stomach is in my future. And I never really had any intention to give up chocolate. I think that was a year I didn't have any other resolutions.

As you can see, my New Year's resolutions never changed my life. But what has changed it is talking to God about my hopes and dreams. And then, with his help, having the desire to work hard for them. I encourage you to do the same.

Have a safe and happy New Year!

Autumn
