"Miley Made a Mistake"
What Ignite readers are saying about the Miley Cyrus photo scandal.
Online exclusive

'Miley Made a Mistake'

Last week, Ignite Your Faith's free e-newsletter (sign up here) focused on the controversy regarding the revealing and sexual photos of Miley Cyrus both on the internet and in Vanity Fair magazine. We asked what you thought of the controversy and you had a lot to say.

First, a record number of readers voted in our online poll about their response to Miley's mess. The results:

52 percent said: "I was disappointed, but everyone makes mistakes."

14 percent said: "I don't get what the big deal is."

13 percent said: "I haven't heard about this."

8 percent said: "I don't care."

6 percent said: "I've completely lost faith in Miley"

4 percent said: "I'm boycotting Miley/Hannah Montana"

Secondly, we received dozens of e-mails about Miley. Here are a few:

Second Chances
My friends have often made the claim that Miley was just the next Britney Spears, and that she would get herself into trouble. I, on the other hand, decided to give her a chance after really enjoying an episode of Hannah Montana.

When I heard the news about the photos, I felt disappointed and betrayed. I'd really believed in her and stuck up for her. But Ignite's newsletter about Miley really made me think things over. First of all, I didn't know that she was a Christian. Secondly, you reminded me that even if she wasn't Christian, we should all give each other, as human beings, second chances. Yes, she made a mistake, but she's human just like the rest of us. I still believe she's a great person and I only hope the best for her and her decision-making abilities in the future.

—Stacey

She Reacted Well
Thank you for reminding us that we are, by no means, perfect. As a semi-avid 17-year-old Hannah Montana viewer, I was initially disappointed/slightly disturbed when I heard about the Vanity Fair photos of Miley. But, I felt a little better when I saw that she feels embarrassed. Although I disagree with her choice to do the photo-shoot in the first place, I don't know how else she should have handled the situation. I just wanted to thank you for addressing the issue from a Christ-like standpoint. You chose to neither judge her, nor to dismiss it altogether.

—Heather

Everybody Messes Up
As a teenage guy, I do not watch Hannah Montana, but I still find this whole mess very sad.I have read interviews with the family and believe they are a Christian family. I think Miley just made a mistake. I do not think it makes her any less redeeming or Christian as a person. Everybody screws up. Iscrew upevery day. I think she is truly sorry for what she did. I think some people make it a bigger deal than it has to be.She needs our prayers.

—Matt

The Next Britney Spears?
As a 14-year-old fan of everything Miley or Hannah, I've been disappointed by the actions of Hollywood in general. But how can everyone be so judgmental with her when they've donethe same kind of things she did in those pictures? Granted, not many of us have taken pictures for Vanity Fair, but sitting cozily with her boyfriend? Goofing off with her best friend during a sleepover? Anyone can do that.

Miley Cyrus is not perfect, but our generation has so much access to digital photos, social networking sites and image searches that it doesn't matter what she does, someone will make it look horrible. Everyone seems to be saying she is going to be the next Britney Spears. Number one, who said Britney Spears is beyond help? Number two, how can we doom poor Miley already?

All in all, we all just need to be praying for her, sending her our support, showing our love for her throughout this time in her life. Don't deem her as trashy or worthless just because of one incident. She is a great girl, and believe it or not, a wonderful role model.

—Alicia

Where Were Her Parents?
I think it was a wrong decision for her to make, but I also think Miley is still young enough that she should be under the care and protection of her parents. They should have known better than to put her in a compromising position of posing for Vanity Fair and for the photographer.

—Tracy

She's No Christian
To be completely honest, I have never liked Miley Cyrus. I never believed that she was a true Christian. Sure, she may say she is on the outside, but I'm convinced that she doesn't believe in God on the inside. I've been boycotting Miley for a while and I wish others would do the same.

—Caitie

Feeling Sorry for Miley
I believe what Miley did was wrong. I believe it was not showing God in any form or fashion. But everybody makes mistakes—I hope that she sees that, and asks God for forgiveness. At the moment I feel sorry for her because whatever mistakes she makes will be talked about and displayed everywhere.

—Emileigh

She's Only 15
It was great she realized what she did was wrong, because most celebrities these days wouldn't think anything of it. I don't think anyone should view her differently because of the incident. She's only 15 and has a lot of her life left to live. She's now made a mistake, but I think she's probably learned a lesson about taking photos like this in the future.

—Melinda

Pray for Celebrities
I'm disappointed about the pictures. Hollywood rationalizes inappropriate things so much that it is easy for standards of purity to erode. It is a reminder of how we need to pray for Christians in the spotlight. How easy it is to make decisions we regret! I sure have made my fair share.

—Ann
