They're "fishing" in the right fishing ground that Jesus fished in, but the pastor has made one huge mistake. He as avoided using the Word of God. May advice--and don't get me wrong, I absolutely love what he is doing and who he is reaching out to--is that he needs to introduce giving short expository sermons going through the Word of God. Calvary Chapels (Chuck Smith/Costa Mesa, CA variety) fish in the same rich fishing grounds, and their "connective expository" preaching from the Word of God is extremely powerful. I recommend the pastor visit the local Detroit Calvary Chapel, and talk to their pastor, and listen to a few of their sermons, even get some of their sermon tapes. Start to introduce these folks to the Word of God, preached in a gutsy, street level manner. It would do these folk a world of good. Check out the Gospel section of this site for a good sample of these expository sermons. You can make short versions that fit the type service you have. God Bless you.
