Rethinking Your Map
This Week's Theme: You and Your Job
Friday, April 7

Key Bible Verse: What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes (James 4:14b).
Bonus Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:1-3

From the Wall Street Journal: "On May 6, 1993, James Houghton, chief executive of Corning Inc., stepped off a curb into the dimly lighted streets of Williamsburg, Va., and was hit by a car. The impact knocked Mr. Houghton out of his shoes, crushing his right leg and throwing him headfirst to the pavement.

"He survived and has healed well, except for a slight limp when he is tired. … And yet, the events affected Mr. Houghton profoundly. He came perilously close to death. And a close friend and confidant died of a heart attack soon afterward at the age of 50."

These disruptive moments, provide a chance to rethink the map of personal experience and direction. Mr. Houghton's accident caused him to evaluate his entire work life. The result? A shift of power to other Corning executives and a set of decisions that made him plan an earlier retirement and involvement in community organizations where his skills and contributions could continue. He said, "I feel very good about my management team, and if I walked out of here tomorrow, they'd be ready to step in."

Gordon MacDonald in When Men Think Private Thoughts

Personal Challenge:

  • Have you had a disruption in your life? What does it say about your direction?

Thought to Apply:

If I could do it all again, I would do less, and allow God to do more through me.

—VANCE HAVNER (LATE PREACHER AND EVANGELIST)
