Do New Church Board Members Need Training?

In order for new church board members to more effectively perform their duties, it is important for the church to provide them with an appropriate orientation.

Church board members cannot be personally liable for their actions.

New board members should be provided with orientation materials, including such documents as the current version of the church's bylaws, financial statements, minutes of board meetings, minutes of membership meetings, and the church budget.

Uncompensated church board members ordinarily are not subject to any "fiduciary duties."

A church board member who misses most meetings may be in violation of the fiduciary duty of due care.

A church board enters into a contract for services with a company owned by one of the church board members. This arrangement may violate the board members' fiduciary duty of loyalty.
