Top tracks: “A Star’s Lament,” “Daydream,” “Sorrows”

If one could cross the vocals and styles of Patty Griffin, Sara Groves, and Over the Rhine’s Karin Bergquist, you’d come up with something like Melanie Penn, a New York City singer/songwriter who has gained a following as a worship leader at Redeemer Presbyterian and in local gigs. Evocative songs of love (and love lost), of seeing the divine in nature and the cosmos, of relationships both temporal and eternal—all delivered with sweet grace and lovely poetry. With production and a few co-writes from Ben Shive and a lineup of some of Nashville finest session musicians, this is a stellar debut.
