The “hymns” that Hiatt references in his album title don’t exactly fit the definition you’d typically find in CT. No, these are paeans to the human spirit, songs that seek to find reverence in the lowest ebbs and highest peaks of existence. This means the bubbling joy that spills out of Hiatt on “I Love That Girl” and the absolute heartbreak of the ode to 9/11 that closes out the album. The connecting thread is Hiatt’s gloriously ragged voice and his band’s dusty take on blues, folk, and roots rock.
