Top tracks: “Strange Girl,” “Cross That River,” “Oh How”

Fans of the Choir—especially of vocalist Derri Daugherty’s ethereal, echoing guitar sound—will love this album. Loudest Sound recalls the dark, Euro six-string vibe of latter ’80s underground rock (the sonic pool where the Choir was spawned). A very good thing made even better by hooky melodies, crackling musicianship, and Steve Hindalong’s better-than-ever lyrics. “Takin’ the Universe In,” a rare unabashed love song, has the drummer declaring to his wife: “I want to ride the train that keeps rumbling your floor / I want to feel the draft that seeps under your door / I want to be there for your hereafter and your here before.” Lush, sparkling, and satisfying.
