Top tracks: “Generals,” “Body of Work,” “Mightier than the Sword”

Captivating singer Laura Burhenn and her band have almost completely dropped the gospel-influenced sound of their debut, What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood. Fortunately, though, it’s impossible for Burhenn to shed her dusty, soulful voice. The gospel truths of Flood, have largely been replaced as well, with songs of feminine empowerment that provide a fitting soundtrack for Burhenn’s “New Revolutionists” photo project. You’ll hear an f-bomb or two, and lines such as, “Heaven’s hell, I say / It gets in the way.” But you’ll also hear words of encouragement in “Mightier than the Sword,” a stirring ballad: “I promise, you are loved … When you forget the words, I will sing them for you.”
