The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival wrapped up on Sunday, with the Palme d'Or going to Blue is the Warmest Color, a coming-of-age lesbian romance. Blue will go down in film history not only for its intense sexually explicit content, but also for a surprise move from the Cannes jury, led by Steve Spielberg. They made the unprecedented decision to present the award not only to director Abdellatif Kechiche, but also to the two female leads, Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos. Fast and Furious 6 opened this weekend, earning roughly $120 million in the box office. This puts it right behind Iron Man 3 as the second highest opening this year, and ranks it as the fourth highest Memorial Day opening to date. In other box office news, The Hangover Part III opened this weekend, earning $51.2 million—relatively low numbers—while Epic came in higher than anticipated at $42.6 million. Mr. Morgan's Last Love, starring Michael Caine, has been sold to 20 different territories. Image Entertainment recently acquired the U.S. rights, and now Global Screen has sold to a number of other production companies across the globe. It's easy to see why the romantic drama, set in Paris, starring Caine, helmed by Sandra Nettelbeck, and scored by Hans Zimmer would have a wide appeal. Read more here.
Jane Got a Gun, another film just off the Cannes Film Market, has been acquired by The Weinstein Co. and Relativity, partnering as domestic distributors.
