A House with Many Rooms

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.”

John 14:1–4

Today’s Verse

You might think that a truly spiritual person wouldn’t long for a big house with lots of rooms. But that’s exactly what Jesus promises us:

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. (John 14:1–3)

This house is not only large, it is well-prepared. Not only will there be a place for us, there will be rooms for all of those that you love who have been born again to eternal life. But it won’t be the many rooms or the other people in them that will make this house our home.

We will only truly be at home when we are with our Bridegroom. While the visions of heaven described in the book of Revelation include bejeweled gates and golden streets, these are not the main attraction. Heaven will be heaven because God will be there. We probably won’t even notice the sea of glass or the pearl gates because our eyes will be for our beloved. To be with him will be to be at home at last.

Reflect:
Read John 14:1–4 as well as Revelation 21:1–22:5. In light of all you’ve studied this week, how does this vision of eternity with God encourage and inspire you?

Pray:
Focus your prayer on praising God. Use your own words to express gratitude for God’s promise of heaven.
