Today’s Verse

Many of us struggle with our worth primarily because we’ve grown accustomed to lies. These lies may have wormed their way into our lives during our childhood, or they may have been spoken over you last week. Lies like, “You’ll never amount to anything,” or “You can never make up for all you’ve done wrong,” or “You’re ugly” resonate through us so powerfully that we can begin to believe them as truth.

Remember this: Lying is the native language of Satan. He comes to steal, kill, and destroy you, and his favorite way to do that is to make you believe lies about yourself. The way through toward healthy self-worth comes from combatting those lies with the truth of who you are.

One of the lies I’ve believed as truth is the notion that I deserve to be overlooked. This stemmed from the neglect I experienced as a child. I simply didn’t believe I was worthy of anyone’s attention.

What helped me was healthy theology—reminding myself of the truth of God’s Word. A tangible way I did this was to write down a lie I believed on one side of a 3 x 5 card, then to write the truth about myself on the other side in the form of a Scripture passage. When I slipped back into believing lies, I thumbed through my index cards, letting God’s truth soak into me. Your Father loves you and desires for you to believe the truth about yourself—that you are worth loving and your life is worth living.

Reflect
Read John 8:31–32. What lies have you believed (wrongly) about yourself? What truths have set you free?

Pray
Pray using the exercise described above: identify one or more lies that have infiltrated your thinking, then use Scripture to combat that lie. Pray about the truth you find in God’s Word.
