Storytelling Resources

I’m committed to storytelling in preaching, but it’s an ongoing challenge to find quality stories and illustrations. Here are some of the most helpful books I have found.

“Speaking in Stories, Stories for Telling,” and “Stories for the Journey” by William White (Augsburg).

“The Sower’s Seeds: One Hundred Inspiring Stories for Preaching, Teaching and Public Speaking” by Brian Cavanaugh (Paulist).

“Imagination and Faith” by William Bausch (TwentyThird Publications).

“Stories and Parables for Preachers and Teachers” by Paul Wharton (Paulist).

“No Wonder They Call Him the Savior In the Eye of the Storm,” “Six Hours One Friday,” “God Came Near,” “On the Anvil,” “The Applause of Heaven,” and “He Still Moves Stones” by Max Lucado.

“Illustrations for Biblical Preaching” by Michael Green (Baker).

“Friends for Life: A Treasure of Stories for Worship and Other Gatherings” by Michael Williams (Abingdon).

“Getting Ready for Sunday’s Sermon” (Volume 2) by Martin Thielen (Broadman).

“The Storyteller’s Companion to the Bible.” Three volumes, Genesis, Exodus-Joshua, and Judges-Kings, are available (Abingdon).

“The Light in the Lantern,” “Jesus on the Mend,” “Parables for Little People,” “Winter Dreams and Other Such Friendly Dragons,” and “Storytelling Step by Step.” For a catalogue describing these and other storytelling books, write Resource Publications, 160 E. Virginia St., #290, San Jose CA 95112-5876.
