Style: Operatic goth-rock; compare to Flyleaf, Skillet, Seether

Top tracks: "The Other Side," "Swimming Home," "The Change"

Evanescence's third studio album tightens the band's signature sound—chugging metal guitar riffs, swelling strings, and piano runs laced around Amy Lee's soaring vocals. It rocks hard with accessible pop sensibilities, yet closing ballad "Swimming" gets more ambient, a la Imogen Heap. Lyrics remain often dark and cryptically spiritual. Lee still uses music as catharsis for painful emotions and relational brokenness, though maybe it's not all self-absorbed—she says "My Heart Is Broken" was inspired by victims of sex trafficking. And hope frequently flashes in lines such as "Somewhere beyond the pain there must be a way to believe" ("What You Want").
