In Acts 15, we find the first major church dispute. Considering how Christians like to argue about stuff, the reason for the disagreement is quite interesting.

Was it over Calvinism, Arminianism, or Molinism?

Was it over speaking in tongues, prophecy, or healing?

Maybe it was over worship music styles? Those Jews just couldn’t stand those Greek worship leaders wearing tight, skinny-leg jeans.

The first major church dispute actually was over how fast multiethnic churches were growing outside of Jerusalem. These ethnically diverse congregations were blowing up the mental and cultural circuits of the Jewish believers in the holy city.

These first-century multiethnic churches included Jews and Gentiles of Phoenicia and Samaria, as well as uncircumcised Africans, Arabs, Greeks, Syrians, Asians, Romans, Persians, and more. Their presence and growth challenged traditional concepts of what it meant to be Jewish and what it meant to follow Jesus.

A recent survey by Ligonier Ministries shows how inexact the label “Christian” can be. Among Americans, 77 percent say they are Christian. But what does that mean?

To try to answer that question, Ligonier Ministries, the teaching fellowship of popular theologian R.C. Sproul, conducted a benchmark study to try to discern “The State of Theology” in the United States.

Ligonier notes that, while more than two-thirds of Americans agree on a few biblical truths, often more than half of Americans disagree with many statements expressing orthodox Christian doctrine. One such statement is the scriptural belief that humans are, by nature, sinful and under the judgment of God for sin.

“Here we have Americans, the majority of which are thinking that we are by nature basically good,” said Stephen Nichols, the chief academic officer of Ligonier. “And from there, you’re going to spin off into your doctrine of Christ and what he did on the cross and your doctrine of salvation, really touching all of the other doctrines.”

Ligonier partnered with LifeWay Research to survey 3,000 Americans from all walks of life. The sample included churchgoers, born-again Christians, and nonbelievers.

“The National Democrat message to support abortion destroys Democratic candidates in pro-life states and districts by pushing pro-life democrats out of the party,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats for Life. “A large majority of Democrats support reasonable restrictions on abortion. We are alienating a whole new generation of pro-life Democrats.”

After 1972, when the Democratic Party began making abortion its issue, the pro-life voter began leaving the Democratic Party. Democrats today are leaving the Party because of the singular focus on promoting abortion. According to a recent Gallup Poll, twenty-four percent of pro-life voters “will only vote for a candidate that shares their views.”

“In pro-life states and districts, Democrats, and particularly pro-life women, have a hard time pulling the lever for a candidate who is associated with a Party that not only supports abortion but actively campaigns against providing any reasonable restrictions on a ‘medical procedure’ that takes a life,” said Day. “Pro-life Democrats believe that life exists in the womb. Until the Democratic leadership accepts and respects that point of view, the Party will not heal and not win.”
