Jony Ive is the senior vice president of design at Apple and is known as the great design mind behind the products at Apple. In a rare interview, Jony shares some lessons he learned from working with Steve Jobs. In the interview, he recounts a conversation with Steve where Steve rebukes him for leading to be approved, for wanting approval from his team more than anything else.

According to Jony, he wondered if Steve could “moderate” his comments about his frustration with a product. When asked for the reason for the request, Jony expressed the desire for moderation because “he cared about his team.” Steve challenged him and remarked:

You are just really vain. You just want people to like you. I am surprised at you. I thought you really held the work up as most important, not how you believe you are perceived by other people.

Jony, and I assume Steve, don’t use the term idolatry, but the confrontation centers on a common leadership idol—the idol of approval. When we lead for approval, we really are vain. We are leading for ourselves, to feel needed and appreciated. While we can mask our pride by insisting our decisions are really for the team, if approval is our ultimate goal, then we really aren’t leading for the sake of others.

The online survey, which was conducted on August 7, included 1,137 Americans, and had a margin of error of about 3 percentage points.

Lifeway's findings aren't really surprising. Polls have consistently shown that plenty of Americans — more than half, according to a recent Pew poll — pray on a regular basis.

What is interesting about LifeWay's data is that it shows many Americans believe God answers their prayers. Among praying adults, 1 in 4 say God answers all their prayers, and 37 percent say God answers some of them. Only 3 percent of those who pray think God answers none of them.

Religious people aren't the only ones praying. A Pew study from 2013 found that more than 1 in 5 religiously unaffiliated, or "nones," said they pray daily.

This trend is particularly evident among Millennials, as I recently reported. According to a study out earlier this year from Carnegie Mellon University's Integrated Innovation Institute, while only 52 percent of Millennials look to religion for guidance, 62 percent of them say they talk privately to God. This suggests that Millennials aren't giving up on God — more of them are just cutting out the middleman and going straight to God with their prayers.

As fewer and fewer Millennials (or maybe just white Millennials) attend a local church with regularity, pastors frantically read books and blogs about how to keep young people in the pews. Few pastors and churches are attracting Millennials in droves, and most pastors are simply frustrated by the fact that they can’t seem to get young people to walk through the doors, take off their coats, and stay a while.

I’m not a pastor. I’m not a missiologist. There are probably plenty of people reading this blog post that are a whole lot smarter than me and more qualified to write regularly about reaching people and getting people in church. I’m not an expert, but based on my conversations and interactions with a number of my peers, I’ve gathered a general idea for what keeps young people from the church (outside of the whole homosexuality debate and other similar issues).

Here are five (of many) reasons why there are no Millennials in your church:

I’m not saying you need a 23-year-old senior pastor, but if you hope to attract young people to your church, you’ve got to pay attention to who is in your leadership and who the church thinks it is being led by. This same principle applies to pursuing a multiethnic church. You can’t expect your church to be diverse if your leadership is made up of a bunch of 40-something white men. Diversifying leadership (both generationally and ethnically) goes a long way toward reaching a more diverse group of people.
