There are plenty of ways you can become a more involved citizen. First, ask yourself a few basic questions, like: What are the problems in my community I'd like to help solve? What gifts or talents do I have that I could use in my community? How much time do I have to offer? Once you have some answers, you can get moving.

  • Offer to bring your family pet to a local nursing home, where a visit from an animal can really brighten someone's day.
  • Volunteer to read to children who are in the hospital.
  • Put together a charity car wash with your youth group or sports team. Challenge other groups or teams to match the money you make with a charity event of their own.
  • Call city hall and ask how you can help register voters.
  • Organize a paper or can recycling drive.
  • Tutor a child from your church or neighborhood who could use some after-school help.
  • Start a service club at your school. Together, find projects that could impact your city.
  • Attend school board or city council meetings. These are usually open to the public and decisions made here affect life in your community.

Still need ideas? Brainstorm with your youth pastor, friends or family for more ways to participate in the life of your town. Whatever you do, you'll be amazed how God can use you to make a difference!
