The goal of pastoring is not to make yourself indispensable, but to make Christ irresistible. And, in doing so, to help the church become so strongly dependent on Christ that it can function without you. Maybe even without any pastor for long stretches of time – which happens a lot in small churches.
If you’re a small church pastor who’s been frustrated with your inability to gain control of the church, stop trying.
Pastoring – especially in a small church – is more about letting go of control than hanging on to it.
