However, the most crucial area of transition, leadership, has received minimal attention. For more than 35 years, I have been overseeing the ministry of young InterVarsity staff and college student leaders. In that time I have seen a significant swing in how these young leaders view leadership. The emerging generation of leaders desires a context that fosters community, trust, journey, vision, and empowerment.<\/p><p>\n\tIf we are going to transition the church to the next generation, both existing and emerging leaders will need to understand and appreciate each other&#39;s values. This quiz, developed in conjunction with the editors of <em class=\"citation\">Leadership<\/em>, is a helpful start.<\/p><p>\n\tThis tool is intended to foster dialogue between older and younger leaders about their divergent views and contribute to greater understanding between the generations. No test can fully reveal the nuances that exist within an entire generation, and you may agree with more than one answer for a question. Mark the answer that best fits your approach to leadership.<\/p><p><strong>A. The predominant role of the senior pastor should be to<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tFacilitate a team of diversely gifted peers<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tManage and set the vision for the organization<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tPreach and care for the congregation<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>B. Evangelism happens best in<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tCoffee shops where relationships are fostered<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWorship services where relevant teaching is encountered<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tSpecial events where gifted evangelists proclaim the gospel<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>C. Leaders foster spiritual growth best by<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tTraining others in personal spiritual disciplines<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tCreating programs that address specific life issues<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTeaching correct doctrine and biblical knowledge<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>D. I would be likely to adopt a new ministry practice if it was<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tSpiritually transformative for the community<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tProven to be measurably\/quantitatively effective<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tShown to be more doctrinally sound<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>E. My greatest fear for the 21st century church is that it will lose its<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tAuthenticity<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tEffectiveness<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tPurity<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>F. The church&#39;s leadership exists primarily to<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tEmpower the people<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tLead the people<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tProtect the people<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>G. The church is most effective when its vision is determined by<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tA team of diversely gifted leaders<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA pastor with the gift of leadership<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA board of deacons\/elders<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>H. A pastor&#39;s leadership credibility is earned by<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tThe authenticity of his\/her relationships<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tThe record of his\/her effectiveness<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tThe certification of his\/her credentials and education<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>I. The success of a church staff depends on<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tThe trust they have with one another<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tThe success each one has in his\/her ministry sphere<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tThe commitment each one has to biblical truth<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>J. I would prefer to spend one day with a<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tMonk<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tMarketing expert<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tMilitary commander<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>K. I would be most likely to encourage a new believer to<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tConnect with a mentor<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tConnect to a small group<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tConnect to a Bible class<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>L. The internet and social networking websites are<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tIndispensible to my relationships and ministry<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTools I occasionally utilize in my ministry<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIrrelevant to my ministry<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>M. When seeking leadership guidance, I would be most likely to read a book by<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tHenri Nouwen<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tJohn Maxwell<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tOswald Chambers<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>N. The philosophy of ministry I find most appealing is best exhibited by:<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tAlan Hirsch<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tBill Hybels<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tBilly Graham<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>O. Art should be used in worship gatherings primarily to<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tHelp worshipers express themselves to God<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIllustrate the theme or point of the sermon<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tMake the space more visually appealing<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>P. Social justice is<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tAt the core of the gospel<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAn implication of the gospel<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA distraction from the gospel<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>Q. Church traditions<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tProvide rootedness and should be contextualized<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tImpose limitations and should be abandoned if ineffective<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tEstablish boundaries and should be preserved<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>R. When hiring a new staff member, the non-negotiable element is<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tChemistry (how well he\/she fits relationally)<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tCompetency (how well he\/she can accomplish the work)<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tCharacter (how mature he\/she is in faith)<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>S. A sermon has achieved its purpose if<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tPeople are inspired with a vision of God<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tPeople are equipped to live better lives<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tPeople are taught biblical truth<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>T. Secular corporations are<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tAn undesirable source for leadership wisdom<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA valuable source for leadership wisdom<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA neutral source for leadership wisdom<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>U. People in the church primarily need to be:<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tChallenged<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tComforted<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tConvicted<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>V. Church programs should be<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tMinimized and people encouraged to be involved outside the church<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tExpanded and geared toward meeting the needs of non-believers<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tFocused on helping members of the church<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>W. Corporate gatherings are attractive because<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tThe sacraments are observed<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tThe worship experience is uplifting<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tThe Bible is rightly preached<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>X. My church is structured so that if I left tomorrow its ministry would<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tProceed more or less unhindered<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tSuffer a severe and prolonged setback<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tFace a season of decline before recovering<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><p><strong>Y. To help people in their struggle against sin, I am<\/strong><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n\t\tTransparent about my current struggles<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTransparent about my past struggles<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tNot transparent about any struggles<\/li>\n\n<\/ol><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead1\">\n\tHow did you score?<\/h2><p><strong>Tally your ministry age by adding the numbers for each of your answers. (For example, if you selected answer number 3, that equals 3 points.) Your total score will determine your ministry age.<\/strong><\/p><p>\n\tMy Ministry Age _______________<\/p><p>\n\tAges 25 &#8211; 41 Younger Leaders\n\tAges 42 &#8211; 58 Pragmatic Leaders\n\tAges 59 &#8211; 75 Traditional Leaders<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead1\">\n\tYour Age, Our Analysis<\/h2><p>\n\tIt is possible that your &quot;ministry age&quot; is incongruent with your actual age. This is precisely the intent of the quiz. Ministry perspective may, or may not, be a direct product of one&#39;s generation. A younger leader may fall into the Traditional or Pragmatic categories because he or she is more concerned about doctrine or effectiveness. Similarly, an older leader may discover he or she has more in common with those younger in spirit. In either case a better understanding of one&#39;s own leadership style is critical for healthier team dynamics.<\/p><p>\n\tThis begins by understanding the context from which each leadership style emerged and the different strengths each brings to the church and its mission. The Traditional leaders were at the forefront of the church from 1950 to 1970. They came into prominence soon after World War II, when people longed for stability and when the church was embroiled in significant theological battles. These leaders wanted to ensure the church&#39;s survival, remain doctrinally pure, and lead in an orderly manner.<\/p><p>\n\tBy the 1970s, a new generation of leaders was less concerned about denominational stability and more concerned with helping the church become more effective in a rapidly changing culture. These Pragmatic leaders dominated church leadership from 1970 until 2000. They incorporated the successful management practices of companies like GE and IBM to assist in church expansion. Excellence in programs, effectiveness in strategy, and relevance in teaching that led to numerical growth was the goal of these leaders.<\/p><p>\n\tIn the late 1990s, younger leaders began to question the pragmatism of the earlier generation. These leaders have been increasingly influential in the church since 2000. They are more concerned about authenticity than excellence, recognizing that churches need to be loving, vulnerable communities if they are going to draw a skeptical generation toward faith. For them, leadership needs to stem more from cooperation and trust than from individual competency or measurable effectiveness. These values have made the Traditional leaders nervous that the Younger focus too much on belonging and not enough on believing. And the Pragmatic leaders are concerned that Younger leaders are not as committed to quantitative growth as they are to qualitative growth.<\/p><p>\n\tThe church needs all three types of leaders, and they need each other. We need the church to remain doctrinally pure, and we should desire more people to become followers of Christ. However, as I continue to work with younger leaders, I am convinced that if the church is going to thrive in this emerging culture, then we who are more traditional and pragmatic need to willingly and gradually hand over the leadership of the church to the younger generation.
