In the Roman Catholic Calendar All Souls Day (2 November) commemorates the souls of the faithful departed who are regarded as being in purgatory. This being so, we at All Souls are often asked why such a committed evangelical church as ours should have been thus named. The answer is not hard to find. We understand that the church founders were determined to build a church large enough to seat all the souls of the parish. Thus their resolve was not to commemorate all the souls of the dead, but rather to accommodate all the souls of the living.<\/p>\n\n

The church was consecrated and opened to the public on 25 November 1824. So when the year 1974 dawned, we were anxious to mark the 150th anniversary of the dedication of the church. I was asked to preach on the nearest Sunday and to look into the future. With due apologies to Martin Luther King and his famous dream speech in Washington, D.C., I concluded my sermon with my own dream: <\/p>\n\n

I have a dream of a church which is a biblical church<\/em>—\nwhich is loyal in every particular to the revelation of God in Scripture, \nwhose pastors expound Scripture with integrity and\nrelevance, and so seek to present every member\nmature in Christ, \nwhose people love the word of God, and adorn it\nwith an obedient and Christ-like life,\nwhich is preserved from all unbiblical emphases,\nwhose whole life manifests the health and beauty\nof biblical balance. \nI have a dream of a biblical<\/em> church.<\/p>\n\n

I have a dream of a church which is a worshiping church<\/em>—\nwhose people come together to meet God and worship him,\nwho know God is always in their midst and who\nbow down before him in great humility,\nwho regularly frequent the table of the Lord Jesus, to\ncelebrate his mighty act of redemption on the cross,\nwho enrich the worship with their musical skills,\nwho believe in prayer and lay hold of God in prayer,\nwhose worship is expressed not in Sunday services\nand prayer gatherings only but also in their\nhomes, their weekday work and the common things of life.\nI have a dream of a worshipping<\/em> church.<\/p>\n\n

I have a dream of a church which is a caring church<\/em>—\nwhose congregation is drawn from many races, \nnations, ages and social backgrounds, and exhibits\nthe unity and diversity of the family of God,\nwhose fellowship is warm and welcoming,\nand never marred by anger, selfishness, jealousy or pride,\nwhose members love one another with a pure heart\nfervently, forbearing one another, forgiving one\nanother, and bearing one another’s burdens, \nwhich offers friendship to the lonely, support to the\nweak, and acceptance to those who are despised\nand rejected by society, \nwhose love spills over to the world outside, attractive,\ninfectious, irresistible, the love of God himself.\nI have a dream of a caring<\/em> church.<\/p>\n\n

I have a dream of a church which is a serving church—<\/em>\nwhich has seen Christ as the Servant and has heard\nhis call to be a servant too, which is delivered from self-interest, turned inside out, \nand giving itself selflessly to the service of others,\nwhose members obey Christ’s command to live in the\nworld, to permeate secular society, to be the salt of\nthe earth and the light of the world, whose people share the good news of Jesus simply,\nnaturally and enthusiastically with their friends,\nwhich diligently serves its own parish, residents and\nworkers, families and single people, nationals and\nimmigrants, old folk and little children, which is alert to the changing needs of society,\nsensitive and flexible enough to keep adapting its\nprogram to serve more usefully,\nwhich has a global vision and is constantly\nchallenging its young people to give their lives in\nservice, and constantly sending its people out to serve.\nI have a dream of a serving<\/em> church.<\/p>\n\n

I have a dream of a church which is an expectant church—<\/em>\nwhose members can never settle down in material\naffluence or comfort, because they remember that\nthey are strangers and pilgrims on earth,\nwhich is all the more faithful and active because it is\nwaiting and looking for its Lord to return,\nwhich keeps the flame of the Christian hope burning\nbrightly in a dark, despairing world,\nwhich on the day of Christ will not shrink from him\nin shame, but rise up joyfully to greet him.\nI have a dream of an expectant<\/em> church.<\/p>\n\n

Such is my dream of a living church. May all of us share this dream, and under God may the dream come true! <\/p>\n\n
