The batter from the\n\t\t\topposing team stepped up and made the sign of the cross on home\n\t\t\tplate with his bat. Berra was a Catholic, too, but he wiped out\n\t\t\tthe plate with his glove and said to the pious batter, &#8220;Why don&#8217;t\n\t\t\twe let God just watch this game?&#8221;<\/p><p>Letting God just watch. That&#8217;s good theology when applied to the\n\t\t\toutcome of a baseball game. It&#8217;s terrible theology when applied\n\t\t\tto the way we live our lives and carry out the work of the\n\t\t\tchurch.<\/p><p>But too often that&#8217;s precisely the outlook we bring to our\n\t\t\tvocation as pastors. God attends the game, but only as an honored\n\t\t\tspectator. Our prayers are merely ceremonial functions, like\n\t\t\tasking the President of the United States to throw out the first\n\t\t\tbaseball at the beginning of baseball season.<\/p><p>Our work in the church calls for practical things: committees,\n\t\t\tnot prayer calls; talking, writing, telephoning, spending,\n\t\t\tbudgeting, mobilizing, organizing, and mailing. And those things\n\t\t\ttake time. So prayer gets preempted. It&#8217;s a pleasant luxury that\n\t\t\twould be wonderful to spend more time on, if only we had the time\n\t\t\tto spend. But necessity presses in. After all, we have the budget\n\t\t\tto complete, the policies to formulate, and the proposals from\n\t\t\tthe fellowship committee to act upon. Why don&#8217;t we believe we&#8217;re\n\t\t\tgetting anything done when we pray?<\/p><p>We could learn from St. Benedict of Nursia, who founded his\n\t\t\tBenedictine order as a reaction to the worldliness of the sixth-\n\t\t\tcentury church. His slogan was Ora Labora, from the Latin ora,\n\t\t\t&#8220;Pray,&#8221; and labora, &#8220;work.&#8221; He taught his followers that to pray\n\t\t\twas to work, and to work was to pray. Following that rule, the\n\t\t\tBenedictine order broke down the artificial dichotomy between\n\t\t\twork and prayer. From there they also bridged the gap between the\n\t\t\tmanual arts and the liberal arts, the physical and the\n\t\t\tintellectual, and the empirical and the speculative. A great\n\t\t\ttradition developed in which learning, science, agriculture,\n\t\t\tarchitecture, and art flourished.<\/p><p>We must learn that prayer is our chief work. Only then can our\n\t\t\twork become prayer: real service, real satisfaction, real\n\t\t\tworship, praise, adoration, and sacrifice. The classical postures\n\t\t\tof prayer, arms stretched out and hands open, or head bowed and\n\t\t\thands folded, are gestures of openness and submission to God.\n\t\t\tThey express perhaps the greatest paradox of prayer: that only\n\t\t\twhen we give up on our human efforts can God&#8217;s work begin and,\n\t\t\tmysteriously, human effort can come to fulfillment. As Ole\n\t\t\tHallesby puts it in his book Prayer, &#8220;Wherever we touch his\n\t\t\tAlmighty arm, some of his omnipotence streams in upon us, into\n\t\t\tour souls and into our bodies.
