Scripture: “Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under\n\t\t\tEli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were\n\t\t\tnot widespread.Then the Lord called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And he\n\t\t\tsaid, ‘Here I am!'” (1 Sam. 3:1, 3-4).<\/p>

O<\/strong>n my way to age 50, I woke up and realized I was hearing this\n\t\t\told, familiar story in a different way. For as long as I can\n\t\t\tremember, when I heard the story of God calling little Samuel\n\t\t\twhile he lived with the old priest, Eli, I always identified with\n\t\t\tSamuel. I was one of those pastors who heard the voice of God as\n\t\t\ta youth. While I was still much too young to understand the full\n\t\t\timplications, God called me to serve him as a leader in his\n\t\t\tchurch. Similarly, Samuel’s story is about a boy called by God, a\n\t\t\tboy far too young to understand the full meaning of that call.<\/p>

But then one day I was 50, and I realized that I no longer\n\t\t\tidentified with little Samuel. I was starting to identify with\n\t\t\taging Eli. Here was old Eli, working in the temple for a\n\t\t\tlifetime, and had God ever spoken so directly to him? Had God\n\t\t\tever awakened him in the middle of the night, calling him by his\n\t\t\tvery own name?<\/p>

Why had God only spoken to this Samuel, a boarder in the\n\t\t\tLord’s house, but not to old, experienced, dedicated Eli, nor any\n\t\t\tof Eli’s children?<\/p>

Here I am, now having served the Lord as a pastor for over 30\n\t\t\tyears. Some little upstart shows up, somebody in his early\n\t\t\ttwenties, telling me that God has spoken to him, telling me that\n\t\t\tGod has called. Why did God not speak directly to me? Why does\n\t\t\tGod insist on speaking to someone half my years?<\/p>

Here is my church, shrinking in membership. Then there is that\n\t\t\tnew church, that young church on the edge of town. Their building\n\t\t\tis not nearly so nice as ours. They obviously have a less able\n\t\t\tand less experienced pastor! And yet they grow. Why would God\n\t\t\tbless their efforts so profusely?<\/p>

This story of little Samuel and old Eli becomes a story for those\n\t\t\tof us in the latter stages of our careers. To serve this God\n\t\t\tmeans to let this God be God—sovereign. This God is free to\n\t\t\tbypass us and go to those less experienced, these young upstarts,\n\t\t\twho do not have our maturity, experience, and wisdom. In each\n\t\t\tgeneration, God calls those whom God calls.<\/p>

Why does God do this? Think about it. One day when I was young,\n\t\t\tGod called me. One day, a long time ago, I was the young upstart.\n\t\t\tNow, I am the old, accommodated member of the establishment. To\n\t\t\tkeep his church alive, thank God, the Lord goes to a new\n\t\t\tgeneration. Maybe God does this to keep shaking things up. Or\n\t\t\tmaybe he does this to keep proving to us that the church is of\n\t\t\tGod, not of us. God keeps sustaining the church by infusing new\n\t\t\tlife into it—by calling people whom we might not have called.<\/p>
