Editor’s Note: For some years I have admired the work of\n\t\t\tLeadership Network, a Dallas-based organization that promotes\n\t\t\tinnovation and excellence in churches. For this issue’s “Leader’s\n\t\t\tInsight,” I invited Dave Travis, Leadership Network’s Vice\n\t\t\tPresident of Venture Development, to share what he’s been\n\t\t\tthinking about Christian leadership:<\/p>

“I<\/strong>n my role at Leadership Network, I am privileged to serve the\n\t\t\tsenior leadership teams of large, influential congregations in\n\t\t\tthe U.S. Most of these leaders are highly gifted and aggressive\n\t\t\tin leadership. Their styles fit them and their congregations.<\/p>

My family’s church is different: 153 years old and led by a\n\t\t\tpatient pastor who has served us for over 20 years. Last Sunday\n\t\t\twe had 189 in worship, but more important, we had 136 for the\n\t\t\tannual church picnic later that afternoon. The picnic takes place\n\t\t\tat a picturesque park with grist mill, ball fields, picnic\n\t\t\tpavilion, creek-side swimming hole, trails, waterfalls, and swing\n\t\t\tsets.<\/p>

Every year, most of the church comes out to play, spread out the\n\t\t\tfood, eat, talk, laugh, and goof around.<\/p>

I saw a lot of leadership that day.<\/p>

There was Danny, who directed food to the right places on the\n\t\t\ttables. (You don’t want pie placed next to bean salad.) “Desserts\n\t\t\tgo here, vegetables over there, and put all the drinks on that\n\t\t\ttable.”<\/p>

There was the pitcher of the all-hands softball game, risking\n\t\t\tlife and limb to deliver a soft pitch to my six-year-old and then\n\t\t\tlet her take first base on a foul ball.<\/p>

There was the nine-year-old girl who, after the adult outfielders\n\t\t\thad chased the softball into the creek (a ground-rule double),\n\t\t\twent right in after it, water up to her waist. After all, it was\n\t\t\tour only ball.<\/p>

There was the middle-aged man who carried the same nine-year-old\n\t\t\toff the field after she was shaken up — the ball had hit her and\n\t\t\tbounced off her chest. He hugged her until she stopped crying.<\/p>

There were the old men who walked three-quarters of a mile up the\n\t\t\thill to the field, just to “encourage the young people” in the\n\t\t\tgame.<\/p>

There was the youth who showed leadership by sitting up front and\n\t\t\tstanding and clapping after each performer in the un-talent\n\t\t\tshow. He waved to the crowd to join him. It didn’t matter if the\n\t\t\tperformance was an off-key solo or a refined guitar piece. He\n\t\t\tfelt everyone needed to be cheered.<\/p>

There were the people who automatically fixed dinner plates for\n\t\t\tthose in wheelchairs and the people who began cleaning up. No\n\t\t\tcommittees, no instructions.<\/p>

The deacons, the elected servants of the church, held a brief\n\t\t\tmeeting, primarily to pray over the needs and concerns of the\n\t\t\tchurch. Our deacons lead through prayer.<\/p>

The above acts are not merely acts of kindness; they are the\n\t\t\tleadership behaviors of many churches. Wise leaders cherish and\n\t\t\tnurture these behaviors by recognizing and affirming them.<\/p>
