Each\nring is followed by &#8220;say what?&#8221; and &#8220;now what?&#8221; sections showing how churches\ncan use the information. Tsunami has a companion Web site, extensive footnotes,\nand real church examples. My favorite ring: Get EPIC (experiential,\nparticipatory, image-based, communal). Sweet says high tech must meet high\ntouch. This is a challenging book, to be taken in small bites. His follow-up,\n<em>AquaChurch<\/em>, profiles 12 congregations applying the principles<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Discontinuity and Hope:\nRadical Change and the Path to the Future<\/strong>\n<strong><em>Lyle Schaller<\/em><\/strong> \n(Abingdon, 1999)\n<strong>S<\/strong>challer always\nadds a sense of history. In his familiar, conversational style, he leads\nreaders through the seemingly random and disconnected changes of the late\ntwentieth century. These include shifts from small entities to large,\nneighborhoods to regions, and superstars to teams. Schaller then describes\nconsequences for congregations, committees, parishioners, and denominations.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The Experience Economy<\/strong>\n<strong><em>Joseph Pine and James Gilmore<\/em><\/strong> \n(Harvard Business School Press, 1999)\n<strong>T<\/strong>he authors argue\nthat high profit businesses will move from arranging sales to staging experiences\nfor their customers in order to engage them on many levels. For example,\nDisney World is not a daytripper&#8217;s theme park anymore; it&#8217;s a week-long\nexcursion to zoos, golf clubs, watersports, and nightspots. In the next phase,\nbusinesses will seek to help customers change their lives. Churches, leaders\nin transformation, face greater competition as it becomes profitable.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The 500 Year Delta:\nWhat Happens After What Comes Next<\/strong>\n<strong><em>Jim Taylor and Watts Wacker with Howard Means<\/em><\/strong> \n(Harper Business, 1997)\n<strong>Y<\/strong>ou won&#8217;t\nagree with all their conclusions, but the first three chapters offer lucid\nassessment of the big movements in our culture: the disposition of reason,\nthe deconstruction of economics, and the disorganization of economies. We\nare living through profound changes in how we think, how we buy and sell,\nand how we group ourselves for family, work, and recreation. A good tutorial\non how to study trends. Now in paperback.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>New Rules for the New Economy:\n10 Radical Strategies for a Connected World<\/strong>\n<strong><em>Kevin Kelly<\/em><\/strong> \n(Viking, 1998)\n<strong>T<\/strong>hese ideas, first\npublished in Wired magazine, are now popping up elsewhere. Don&#8217;t label\nthis book &#8220;just another thing on the Internet.&#8221; Kelly&#8217;s insights reach\nwell beyond the Web. On relationships, he observes, &#8220;When information is\nplentiful, peers take over.&#8221; Church leaders should consider the impact of\ntechnology on their teams.
