Followers are\nconcerned about the present, but a leader&#8217;s primary responsibility is\nto find, recognize, and secure the future. A leader is someone you choose\nto follow to a place you wouldn&#8217;t go by yourself.<\/p>\n\n<p>2. <em>Understand the nature of fundamental change<\/em>. New paradigms show\nup before you need them; outsiders are vital. New rules are usually formulated\nby someone not part of the present, successful paradigm.<\/p>\n\n<p>3. <em>Appreciate complex systems and how they work<\/em>. The smallest actions\ncan cause tremendous differences over a long period of time. Anticipate what\neven tinkering will do.<\/p>\n\n<p>4. <em>Examine your leadership style to see how it affects productivity<\/em>.\nTwo leader types, charismatic and bully, are determined by positive or negative\nuse of control and stress and by the measure of their followers&#8217;\nsatisfaction. Followers of positive leaders are up to twenty times more\neffective. No matter how you measure it&mdash;making money, saving souls, educating\nchildren, or protecting a nation&mdash;your leadership style affects your\ngroup&#8217;s productivity.<\/p>\n\n<p>5. <em>Create shared vision to build bridges to the future<\/em>. People now\nexpect to have a voice in their future. Leading is about teams. The fastest growing ethnic group: Hispanics. Interracial marriages\n\t  are rising at a record rate in Western nations&mdash;1.6 million couples in U.S.\n\t  today, ten times the 1960 number. Children of immigrants will account for\n\t  88 percent of under-18 population growth between 2000 and 2050.<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t  (<em>Trend Letter<\/em>, 2\/4\/99)<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t\t  <strong>Numbers too big to ignore.<\/strong> Single\n\t  mothers number nearly 10 million, up from 3.4 million in 1970. Of first children,\n\t  53 percent were born to unmarried women, says the U.S. Census Bureau&mdash;up\n\t  from 18 percent 60 years ago. Reasons? Besides changing morals and the many\n\t  women whose biological clocks demanded they delay pregnancy no longer, count\n\t  sheer numbers of single people. Never-marrieds has doubled since 1970, divorced\n\t  has quadrupled.<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t  (<em>American Demographic<\/em>, May 1999)<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t  <strong>When I&#8217;m 64.<\/strong> Boomers begin reaching\n\t  retirement age soon. The over-60 population will increase from 30 million\n\t  to 50 million by 2015, and 65 million by 2030. Churches in the north and\n\t  Midwest will lose older members as retiring boomers, like their parents,\n\t  head to warmer climes. One-fourth of mobile retirees still go to Florida,\n\t  but Gulf and Smokey Mountain states are the new hot spots. Challenge for\n\t  churches: coping without them, coping with them, and how to tap this growing\n\t  pool of volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t  (<em>American Demographic<\/em>, Jan. 1999)<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t  <strong>Where all the lights are bright.<\/strong> New\n\t  hope for downtown churches as active empty nesters, tired of the suburban\n\t  commute, move to city center. Nearly three-quarters of U.S. households will\n\t  be childless by 2010. Developers foresee neo-urban communities with shopping,\n\t  services, and entertainment within walking distance of housing. Houston,\n\t  Cleveland, and Denver expect biggest gains in downtown residents.<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t  (<em>Trend Letter<\/em>, 1\/21 and 2\/18\/99)<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t  <strong>And they moved to Beverly.<\/strong>\n\t  Urbanization continues unabated as 6 in 10 people live in cities.\n\t  More on the way. These ten counties will lead population growth until 2025:\n\t  Maricopa (Phoenix) AZ; Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino (all\n\t  metro LA) CA; San Diego CA; Harris (Houston) TX; Clark (Las Vegas) NV; Dallas\n\t  TX; and Broward (Ft. Lauderdale) FL. Four counties around Atlanta are among\n\t  the fastest growing in the country today.<\/p>\n\n\t  <p>\t  (<em>Church Champions Update<\/em> ,4\/23\/99; USA Today, 6\/18\/99)<\/p>\n\n    <\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n<\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead1\">MIXED MEDIA<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;And after sports, tonight&#8217;s prayer &hellip; &#8220;<\/strong>\n<em>Pastors&#8217; appearances during nightly news make news.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>T<\/strong>he manager of\na Meridian, Mississippi, television outlet didn&#8217;t know the reaction\nhe would cause when he invited local ministers to pray during the late night\nnewscast. Callers to a daily poll had repeatedly said that the return of\nprayer to schools was needed in light of recent attacks by students. The\nstation&#8217;s response: we can&#8217;t put prayer in schools, but we can\nput it on TV.<\/p>\n\n<p>WMDN\/WGBM general manager Marc Grossman asked pastors to take the final 90\nseconds of his newscast to offer a prayer or devotion, replacing the usual\nlight bit about waterskiing squirrels and such. The segment is called &#8220;Keep\nthe Faith.&#8221; Most pastors intercede for local and national leaders.<\/p>\n\n<p>Danny Chisholm, pastor of Central Baptist Church, taped two appearances.\n&#8220;It&#8217;s been good for our city,&#8221; Chisholm said. &#8220;We need some balance\nto the disturbing news we see. And it&#8217;s a nice way to sign off the day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>ABC reported Grossman&#8217;s unusual programing move on its own evening newscast.\nOther broadcasters were not so delighted. We videotaped a club meeting. All the children were singing and playing games.\nWe made sure to focus in on the children from unchurched families. The message\nfor that session was a clear, simple explanation of the gospel using visual\naids and showing the attentiveness of the children. The edited tape ran 15\nminutes.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then we called the parents and offered to stop by their homes and show them\nthe tape. Most accepted. Even the more reluctant parents were glad to see\ntheir kids having fun.<\/p>\n\n<p>One child&#8217;s father ignored the tape at first, reading the newspaper\ninstead. When the mother oooed and ahhhed, he peeked over the paper. After\na few minutes he laid it aside and watched with pride as his son won an award\nfor Scripture memorization. He even watched through the gospel presentation.<\/p>\n\n<p>Several families visited the church as result of our video and allowed their\nchildren to start attending Sunday school as well.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>&mdash;Tim and Joann Hoganson\nSalvador, Bahai Brazil<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead1\">FIRST IMPRESSIONS<\/h2>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead1\">I&#8217;d Give that Church 5 Stars<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead2\">Pay a stranger to grade your church. You need to know what they think.<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table><tbody>\n\t<tr>\n    <td><strong>P<\/strong><\/td>\n    <td>eople today are consumer minded, looking for congregations and ministries\n      that meet their needs. <\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n<\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<p>People have always had a shopping mentality when seeking\na place of worship, but today they are more up front about it.\nMost people decide after one visit whether they will return. If they like\nwhat they see and feel, they come back. If they return a third time, there\nis a 90 percent chance they&#8217;ll stay, at least for a while.<\/p>\n\n<p>Because so many decisions are made on first impressions, we need to harvest\nfeedback from those who shop us. Here&#8217;s how to implement a secret-shopper\nprogram at your church:<\/p>\n\n<p>1. <strong>Discuss the secret shopper idea with appropriate people<\/strong>. Help them\nunderstand the need. Request finances to recruit and train a shopper. (Pay\nthe shopper $25 to $75. Schedule one per quarter.)<\/p>\n\n<p>2. <strong>Contact potential shoppers<\/strong>. The person being considered should\nnot be part of the church, but should understand the community demographics.\n(Recruit from your target group. If you want to reach young people, hire\na young person; if Hispanics, then a Hispanic.)<\/p>\n\n<p>3. <strong>Provide training insights for the shopper<\/strong>. The shopper should observe\na normal Sunday service unless another area needs evaluation. (And tell the\nshopper what you&#8217;d really like to hear about.)<\/p>\n\n<p>4. <strong>Ask the shopper to attend a service<\/strong>. (Afterward the shopper grades\nthe experience on a form you provide.)<\/p>\n\n<p>5. <strong>Meet with the ministry team<\/strong> within a week of the visit to review\nwritten and verbal feedback of the shopper&#8217;s experience.<\/p>\n\n<p>6. <strong>Use the information<\/strong> to enhance ministries, instruct people, and\nbuild the team. Avoid embarrassing people.<\/p>\n\n<p>7. <strong>Follow up<\/strong> on all changes discussed and implemented. We tried books and tapes&mdash;all kinds of\nthings. People still seemed hesitant to register their attendance or stop\nby our information booth.<\/p>\n\n<p>But recently we landed on an idea that removes the tension and works incredibly\nwell. During our announcement time, we say that the church has made an official\nproclamation: we have made the 100 Grand candy bar (made by Nestle) the official\ncandy bar of our church. Then we tell our visitors that they are worth a\nhundred grand to us and to God. We ask them to fill out the card and stop\nby the booth to swap it for a 100 Grand. And they do!<\/p>\n\n<p>This gift is inexpensive and, more important, it makes our guests feel\nappreciated.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>&mdash;J. Paul Covert\nPalm Valley Christian Church\nPhoenix, Arizona<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead1\">Mugs and Kisses<\/h2>\n\n<p>Our &#8220;thank you&#8221; to Sunday visitors turned into a great outreach to our community.\nAbout four years ago, we started delivering to our guests a special coffee\ncup. We visit their homes within a week of their attendance. The mug, bearing\na church logo, is filled with Hershey&#8217;s Kisses.<\/p>\n\n<p>Nobody has ever fled our &#8220;mugging.&#8221; In fact, the guests liked the gift so\nwell, we took to the streets. We have passed out mugs to customers at a nearby\ngrocery store, a neighborhood gas station, and a small shopping center.
