T<\/strong>he first synod convention I attended after\nordination was held in the ballroom of a magnificent hotel. At one point\nin the gathering, the presiding officer recognized pastors celebrating their\ntwenty-fifth, thirtieth, fortieth, and fiftieth anniversaries of ordination.<\/p>\n\n

As they doddered to the front, I marveled: I had been alive for twenty-five\nyears; these guys (and they were all guys) had lasted<\/em> for twenty-five\nyears as pastors. Some of them twice that!<\/p>\n\n

I have reason for remembering that moment. If my synod chooses to do that\nsame thing this year, I will be one of those doddering pastors. I’ve been\na parish pastor for twenty-five years. Scary thought.<\/p>\n\n

As a wizened sage, let me offer nine lessons parish ministry has taught me\nthat I never learned in seminary. Call them McKinley’s Laws.<\/p>\n\n

Law 1:<\/strong>\nThe person who sticks his or her head into your office and says, “Do you\nhave a minute?” really wants at least an hour.<\/p>\n\n

Law 2:<\/strong>\nCongregation council meetings will take longer and accomplish less than you\nexpect.<\/p>\n\n

Law 3:<\/strong>\nNever estimate to your spouse how long a council meeting will last. The ones\nyou expect to be over in one hour will take three. The meetings you expect\nto take three hours will take one. The council members who are most eager\nto end the official meeting will then spend one hour huddled in small groups\nin the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n

Law 4:<\/strong>\nIf you go to the church office dressed casually, an emergency will occur,\nand you will wish you were wearing more “official” clothing.<\/p>\n\n

Law 5:<\/strong>\nThere are no miracle church cures. No program will instantly solve your problems\nwith stewardship, evangelism, or Christian education. Those who give 2.5\npercent of their income will not become tithers next year, no matter what\nyou do. But hard, steady, relentless work can make a difference over time.<\/p>\n\n

Law 6:<\/strong>\nThe people most eager to become your dear friends when you arrive will probably\nnot be so eager two years later. Within one year you will either have become\ntheir tool or totally alienated them.<\/p>\n\n

Law 7:<\/strong>\nPeople will tease you about your ability to control the weather. You cannot.\nHowever, if your area is desperately in need of rain, try scheduling an outdoor\nwedding or a church picnic. This will usually bring rain.<\/p>\n\n

Law 8:<\/strong>\nYou will regularly foul up. You will know the kind of pastor you want to\nbe, but, at times, you will not live up to that vision (see Romans 7).<\/p>\n\n

Law 9:<\/strong>\nThe congregation will sometimes disappoint you. They will resist new ideas.\nThey’ll stay away from worship to watch a football game. They will fail to\ncarry out the tasks they volunteered to do.<\/p>\n\n

But somehow the Holy Spirit will work through your imperfect ministry in\nthat imperfect congregation to change the world with the good news of Jesus\nChrist.<\/p>\n\n

I hope you young whippersnappers appreciate my generosity in sharing this\nknowledge with you. When I was first ordained, those gnarled veterans of\ntwenty-five to fifty years of ministry couldn’t teach me much about the\npastorate, even though they tried, since I already knew so much.<\/p>\n\n

Today’s “veterans” (like myself) are much wiser than yesterday’s veterans\nwere. Obviously.<\/p>\n\n
