What to do about debt.<\/h2>

\nIf you’re in debt, you’re not alone. Americans owe a staggering $1.2\ntrillion<\/em> on their credit cards. How do you get the upper hand with\ncredit card debt? Here are some tips for squeezing out an extra payment each\nmonth.<\/p>\n\n

—Use your savings.<\/h2>

With savings accounts yielding only from 2.5 to\n3 percent, and credit cards charging 18 percent, you’re actually losing money\nby not applying savings toward debt retirement.<\/p>\n\n

—Track your expenses.<\/h2>

Chip Krueger, president of Fortress Financial\nin Wheaton, Illinois, suggests keeping a daily log of everything you spend,\nno matter how insignificant, for at least a month. “You can save $1 a day\njust by ordering water instead of a Coke at lunch. That’s $30 a month.”<\/p>\n\n

—Make nickel-and-dime savings.<\/h2>

Set a timer when making long-distance\ncalls, find a bank that offers free checking, join a food co-op, refinance\nyour mortgage to a lower interest rate, drop cable for a year.<\/p>\n\n

—Pay off smaller amounts first.<\/h2>

If you can’t consolidate your debt,\npay off your smallest debt first. Then, when that’s paid off, apply what\nyou were paying to your smallest debt to your next smallest one, and so on.<\/p>\n\n

—Seek counsel.<\/h2>

Consumer Credit Counseling Service (800-388-CCCS)\nand other groups offer advice.<\/p>\n\n

What to do about college tuition.<\/h2>

\n“It’s unrealistic to expect to pay for your children’s education,” says Gene\nFrost, ceo of Hosts (Helping One Student To Succeed) Corporation, an educational\nfirm. “It can’t be done-nor should<\/em> it.”\n\nIf you want to help pay for your child’s education, set a goal for the amount\nyou plan to contribute. T. Rowe Price (800-638-5660) and Fidelity (800-544-8888)\noffer free worksheets to help calculate the price of future education. Online,\nyou can use Money magazine’s college calculator (http:\/\/www.moneymag.com<\/a>). Here are\na few alternatives to your footing the bill. Your student can:<\/p>\n\n

—Attend a junior\/community college.<\/h2>

Most four-year institutions accept\ncourse credit from these schools for required classes, and tuition is usually\nhalf the price.<\/p>\n\n

—Get a scholarship.<\/h2>

An estimated $1.25 billion in scholarships are\nawarded each year. You can research them through the FinAid Website\n(www.finaid.org<\/a>), which offers links to 42\nscholarship databases.<\/p>\n\n

—Take out loans.<\/h2>

Student loans offer low interest rates and can be\nconsolidated or deferred until after college. Contact the U.S. Dept. of Education\n(800-433-3243) for information about Stafford or plus, two low-cost loans.<\/p>\n\n

—Postpone schooling.<\/h2>

A student can work full-time saving money, then\nattend school in a year or two. Many schools offer lower tuition rates for\nnon-traditional students (ages 25 and over).<\/p>\n\n

What to do about retirement.<\/h2>

\nIf you have to choose between saving for your child’s college education and\nyour retirement, Penelope Wang, Money magazine writer, advocates that you\nchoose your retirement: “You’re solely responsible for financing your retirement,\nwhile your child will have other options to pay for college, including\nscholarships, loans, and jobs.”\n\nWhat’s more, she says, because most colleges don’t include retirement plan\nassets in calculating how much you can afford to pay, “your [403(b)] or IRA\nstash usually won’t hurt your chances of receiving need-based financial aid.”\n\nSo, how to get started?<\/p>\n\n

—Start small.<\/h2>

Many tax-deferred retirement accounts can be opened\nfor as little as $1. Once the plan is set up, the church can pay directly\ninto the account.<\/p>\n\n

—Set up a mutual fund.<\/h2>

Some will accept as low as $25 a month. Many\nwill waive their minimum initial investment requirements if you agree to\ncontribute monthly.<\/p>\n\n

—Put away $100 a month.<\/h2>

Consumer counseling expert Teresa Rosado\nsuggests, “If you can save $100 a month, at the end of the year you’ll have\nmore than $1,000 to invest in a 403(b) or a CD.”<\/p>\n\n

—Meet with a financial planner.<\/h2>

Those who seek help are likely to\nreap greater financial benefits than those who invest for themselves.<\/p>\n\n
