\nGreat Puritan minister Cotton Mather once wrote this counsel to fellow\npastors:<\/em><\/p>\n

\nIt may not be amiss for you to have two heaps: a heap of Unintelligibles,\nand a heap of Incurables. Every now and then you will meet with something\nor other that may distress your thoughts, but the shortest way with the vexations\nwill be, to throw them into the heap they belong to, and be no more distressed\nabout them.<\/p>\n\n

\nYou will meet with some unaccountable and incomprehensible things, particularly\nin the conduct of many people. Throw them into your heap of Unintelligibles;\nleave them there. Trouble your mind no further; hope the best or think no\nmore about them.<\/p>\n\n

\nYou will meet with some unpersuadable people-no counsel, no reason will do\nanything upon the obstinates: Throw them into the heap of Incurables. Leave\nthem there. And go on to do as well as you can, what you have to do. Let\nnot the crooked things that can’t be made straight encumber you.<\/p>\n\n

\nAnd now, go your way and work in your lot lively and prayerfully and cheerfully\nto the end of your days. Wait and look for what the glorious Lord will do\nfor you at the end of your days, in those endless joys, wherein you shall\nshine as the brightness of the firmament and as the stars forever and ever.<\/p>\n\n
