Change outside the Church.<\/h2><p> You may find the interview with futurist Faith Popcorn, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/le\/1997\/winter\/7l1021.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Church&#8217;s Ten-Year Window<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (p. 22), both troubling and hopeful. Popcorn has no particular interest in Christianity, but surprisingly, she suggests that rampant cultural disillusionment is an opportunity for the church.<\/p><p>One major cultural shift in the last forty years has been the intellectual mood change from modernism to postmodernism. <em>Leadership<\/em> senior associate editor Dave Goetz explains it and its implication for ministry in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/le\/1997\/winter\/7l1052.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Riddle of Our Postmodern Culture<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (p. 52). Certainly one repercussion of postmodernism is a hyper-skepticism; in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/le\/1997\/winter\/7l1040.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Why They Struggle to Believe<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (p.40), four religious seekers talk frankly about their objections to the gospel.<\/p><p>But how much should pastors really care about trying to understand the culture? Not too much, says Will Willimon in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/le\/1997\/winter\/7l1029.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>This Culture Is Overrated<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (p. 29). &#8220;In leaning over to speak to the modern world,&#8221; Willimon writes, &#8220;I fear we may have fallen in.&#8221;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead1\">II. Change inside the Church.<\/h2><p> Since so much is changing outside the church, many people resist change inside the church. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/le\/1997\/winter\/7l1061.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Helping a Settled Congregation Move Ahead<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (p. 61), pastor John Beukema identifies seven steps to the future. Popular consultant Lyle Schaller busts the myths of bringing about change in the church in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/le\/1997\/winter\/7l1046.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>You Can&#8217;t Believe Everything You Hear about Church Growth<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (p. 46).<\/p><p>Yet one thing will never change. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/le\/1997\/winter\/7l1033.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Power of Mere Words<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (p. 32), contributing <em>Leadership <\/em>editor Craig Brian Larson argues that more powerful than any technology are the words of a faithful preacher.
