It is, however, designed in a modular way so that the various parts of the liturgy may be re-arranged to suit other traditions or practices.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>We Gather<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tTherefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. (Hebrews 12:1 &ndash; NLT)<\/p>\n<p>\n\tEternal God,\n\tIn your infinite love for women and men,\n\t<strong>you incarnated yourself in Christ,<\/strong>\n\t<strong>and revealed your nature and your purpose to us;<\/strong>\n\tIn your infinite love for poor and wealthy,\n\t<strong>you laid aside your glory<\/strong>\n\t<strong>and walked among us as one of us;<\/strong>\n\tIn your infinite love for every race and tribe and nation,\n\t<strong>you brought a new world into being<\/strong>\n\t<strong>and taught us to live as citizens of God&#39;s Reign;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut, you have not stopped incarnating yourself,\n\tyou still reveal yourself and your Reign of love and justice\n\tto all who will see,\n\tand to all who open their hearts and lives to you.\n\t<strong>We praise and thank you, O God,\n\tfor the people through whom you reveal yourself still;\n\tfor those who give themselves to build a world\n\tbased on the values of your reign\n\tof love, justice, peace and reconciliation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tToday especially we celebrate the &quot;little incarnation&quot; that was Nelson Mandela,\n\twho gave his life for the sake of justice and freedom,\n\twho lived the world-healing practices\n\tof forgiveness, inclusivity, compassion and integrity.\n\t<strong>We praise and thank you, O God, for Nelson Mandela\n\tfor his faithfulness to your call,\n\this example of justice, peace and reconciliation,\n\tand his courage to endure suffering, rejection and persecution\n\tfor the sake of others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>A moment of silent thanksgiving may be observed, in which people may be invited to share their own experiences and impressions of Nelson Mandela.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\n\t<strong>We Confess<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tGracious and Reconciling God,\n\tEven as we celebrate your grace and love\n\twhich has come to us in Christ,\n\tEven as we remember those who, like Madiba,\n\thave revealed your compassion and freedom to us;\n\tWe are forced to acknowledge\n\tthat we have not always listened, we have not always seen,\n\tand we have all too often failed to act on the call to justice\n\twhich you have spoken through them.\n\t<strong>Forgive us when, in our anger and self-interest\n\twe have imprisoned and oppressed others;\n\tForgive us when, in our apathy and laziness\n\twe have ignored the cries of the poor and marginalised;\n\tForgive us when, in our arrogance and self-protection\n\twe have lost sight of the humanity of others,\n\tand have brought division, injustice and war into our world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>A time of silence may be observed for personal confession.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhen we pretend that we are sinless and whole,\n\twe only drive our darkness deeper within us,\n\tand bring destruction on ourselves and our world;\n\tBut, when we acknowledge our need for change and healing,\n\tGod is gracious and merciful,\n\tfreeing us from every chain and forgiving us\n\tso that we are able to start again.\n\t<strong>Amen! Thanks be to God!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>The Lord&#39;s Prayer may be said together.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\n\t<strong>We Share The Peace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhen justice blossoms on earth,\n\t<strong>peace is its fruit.<\/strong>\n\tWe celebrate the God whose reign is both justice and peace,\n\t<strong>and we celebrate the servants of God who give their lives\n\tto bring these two gifts into our world.<\/strong>\n\tAnd so as God&#39;s people, committed to God&#39;s reign\n\twe share God&#39;s peace with one another,\n\tand we commit to God&#39;s justice.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe peace of God be with you.\n\t<strong>And also with you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>The people are invited to share the peace with one another.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\n\t<em><strong>We Listen<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>Luke 4:16-21 or some other appropriate reading from Scripture may be shared.\n\tBefore the reading is done the following prayer may be offered:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>Jesus, our Teacher, you have made yourself known to us\n\tas the Word of God;\n\tyou have revealed yourself through the ages\n\tthrough various men and women\n\twho, like Nelson Mandela, have answered your call;\n\t<strong>Reveal yourself again to us now, we pray,\n\tthrough the words which we read,\n\tand through the meditations which we hold in our hearts.\n\tAmen.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>A short homily may be offered.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\n\t<em><strong>We Respond<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>We thank you, God of Love and Justice,\n\tthat you are forever working within us and among us,\n\tin our hearts and in our world,\n\tto create wholeness and freedom,\n\tcompassion and connection,\n\tequity and reconciliation;\n\t<strong>And so we pray for your love and justice to fill our world,\n\tas the waters cover the sea.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>We pray for bold prophets to speak your truth\n\twherever our fears and certainties\n\tdrown out your wisdom;\n\t<strong>Amen.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>We pray for courageous leaders to show the way\n\twhenever the complexities and confrontations of our world\n\tleave us confused and overwhelmed;\n\t<strong>Amen.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>We pray for wise teachers to open our eyes, minds and hearts\n\twhenever new challenges and opportunities\n\trequire us to find new solutions and resources;\n\t<strong>Amen.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>We pray for humble servants to demonstrate grace and sacrifice\n\twherever self-interest and expediency\n\tbring destruction and suffering on our world;\n\t<strong>Amen.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>And we pray that the legacy of the Nelson Mandelas of our world\n\twill inspire, challenge, guide and equip us,\n\tto participate in the work of justice and peacemaking,\n\tof reconciliation and healing,\n\tof inclusion and sharing,\n\tthat our world so desperately needs.\n\t<strong>This is our prayer,\n\tIn Jesus&#39;name,\n\tAmen.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>As an act of response, thanksgiving and commitment, the people may be invited to bring flowers (especially the national flower of South Africa &ndash; the King Protea) to lay at the front of the sanctuary.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>They may also be invited to receive a small piece of chain, representing the chains of oppression and inhumanity, of war and disparity, that Nelson Mandela worked to overcome, and which we are called to address in our turn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>The chains can be kept as a symbol of our commitment and a reminder to embrace daily the acts of love and justice that characterize God&#39;s Reign.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\n\t<em><strong>We Go Out<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>In this moment we have remembered and borne witness\n\tto the life of one of your faithful servants, O God;\n\tWe have celebrated Nelson Mandela,\n\tand his legacy of justice, reconciliation and freedom;\n\tAnd we have opened our lives to the influence of your Reign,\n\twhich was reflected in Madiba&#39;s life\n\tand in those of so many other courageous leaders.\n\t<strong>Now we go to follow their example,\n\teven as they followed yours;\n\tto participate in their dream of a different world,\n\teven as they caught the vision from you;\n\tand to serve all people with with humility and sacrifice,\n\teven as they served us.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>May Christ&#39;s limitless grace,\n\tGod&#39;s infinite love and compassion,\n\tand the Holy Spirit&#39;s community-building companionship,\n\tbe with us always.\n\t<strong>Amen.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>A PDF copy of this liturgy may be downloaded <a href=\"http:\/\/sacredise.com\/files\/liturgies\/general\/A%20Liturgy%20of%20Remembrance%20for%20Nelson%20Mandela.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"is-style-article-bio\">\n\t<em>Written by John van de Laar &copy; Sacredise 2011.
