{"id":41895,"date":"2014-10-01T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-01T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/pastors\/preaching\/sermon-illustrations\/taco-bells-tricky-language\/"},"modified":"2014-10-01T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-10-01T12:00:00","slug":"taco-bells-tricky-language","status":"publish","type":"sermon-illustrations","link":"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/pastors\/preaching\/sermon-illustrations\/taco-bells-tricky-language\/","title":{"rendered":"Taco Bell&#8217;s Tricky Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dan Jurafsky, a professor of linguistics at Stanford, revealed in a recent interview some interesting ways that Taco Bell uses language in their menus:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&quot;Fluffy.&quot; &quot;Seasoned.&quot; That&#39;s one thing that&#39;s common on cheaper restaurant menus&mdash;as if the restaurant feels the need to try and convince its diners of the quality of the food.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&quot;Notice the word &#39;flavorful,&#39;&quot; says Jurafsky. &quot;The cheapest restaurants use these vague, positive adjectives. Delicious. Tasty. Scrumptious.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&quot;The description specifies &#39;real cheddar cheese.&#39; Just like all the other adjectives, &#39;real&#39; tells you that they think customers are assuming that the cheese is not real, so they have to tell you that it is.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The words &quot;double portion&quot; and &quot;lots&quot; are also typical on the menus of cheap restaurants,&quot; says Jurafsky. &quot;They want you to know you&#39;re getting enough food for your money.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n<\/p>\n\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>For a few ideas, see this post: &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/evangelism.intervarsity.org\/how\/conversation\/how-not-speak-christianese\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">How not to speak Christianese<\/a>.&quot;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-article-subhead2\"><em>Possible Preaching Angle: <\/em><\/h2>\n\n<p><em>Language can communicate. It can also manipulate. Are we using these same kinds of meaningless words and word tricks when we talk about Christianity?
