{"id":54072,"date":"1998-02-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1998-02-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/pastors\/preaching\/sermon-illustrations\/to-be-spoke-in-wheel-of-state\/"},"modified":"1998-02-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"1998-02-01T00:00:00","slug":"to-be-spoke-in-wheel-of-state","status":"publish","type":"sermon-illustrations","link":"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/pastors\/preaching\/sermon-illustrations\/to-be-spoke-in-wheel-of-state\/","title":{"rendered":"To Be a Spoke in the Wheel of State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are three possible ways in which the church can act toward the state:<\/p>\n    <p>In the first place, it can ask the state whether its actions are legitimate and in accordance with its character as state, i.e., it can throw the state back on its responsibilities.<\/p>\n    <p>Second, it can aid the victims of state action. The church has an unconditional obligation to the victims of any ordering of society, even if they do not belong to the Christian community, &#8220;Do good to all people.&#8221;<\/p>\n    <p>The third possibility is not just to bandage the victims under the wheel, but to jam a spoke in the wheel itself.
