Weekend Wrap-up Theme of the Week: Parental Affirmative Action Saturday, August 19, 2006
 1 of 1

In Paul's instructions to Christian families, there's a balance between what's required of children and of parents. But then—to our 21st-century eyes—an imbalance surfaces. The instructions to parents are addressed only to fathers. In biblical times—and through most of history since then—the training and discipline of children was primarily the father's role. Interact with God's Word
Ephesians 6:1-4;Colossians 3:20-21
- Is the children's obligation to obey their parents cancelled if their parents are demanding or unfair?
- What's the difference between obeying parents and honoring them?
- For how long does the responsibility to honor parents extend?
- What is the responsibility of fathers to their children (Ephesians 6:4)?
- Is the father's obligation cancelled if his children are disobedient or unpleasant?
- Why is discipline administered in frustration or anger usually counter-productive?
- What are some ways (Colossians 3:21) that dads sometimes aggravate their kids?
- What effects do such actions have on children's self-respect?
- What are the effects of expressing appreciation and praise?
- Name some ways a parent-child climate of thoughtfulness and love can be encouraged.
Spend Time in Prayer
Ask God for grace to match firmness in relating to your children with love, fairness, and support. Ephesians 6:1-4
1Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do.
2"Honor your father and mother." This is the first of the Ten Commandments that ends with a promise.
3And this is the promise: If you honor your father and mother, "you will live a long life, full of blessing."
4And now a word to you fathers. Don't make your children angry by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord. Colossians 3:20-21
20You children must always obey your parents, for this is what pleases the Lord.
21Fathers, don't aggravate your children. If you do, they will become discouraged and quit trying.

Lord, the pressures of raising a family can make me come across as a policeman more than a loving parent. Please help me to communicate the love I feel.
