Weekend Wrap-up
Theme of the Week: Fully Engaged Dads
Saturday, March 15, 2008

In an earlier letter to the church at Corinth (our 1 Corinthians), Paul had used strong words to correct divisions and disorder. Some had responded well, but others were resisting his authority and questioning his motives. The way Paul responded to his spiritual children in this subsequent letter provides clues about relating to our own physical offspring.

Interact with God's Word

2 Corinthians 6:11-13;2 Corinthians 7:2-4

  1. Paul wrote this letter as if he were writing it to his own children. Are you able to talk openly with your children about issues they face and about your feelings and theirs?
  2. Do your children know (6:11) that you are being honest with them?
  3. Do your children know (7:4) that you are proud of them?
  4. What would Paul's repeated plea (6:13 and 7:2) tell his "children" about a father's heart?
  5. Are you confident that you've clearly conveyed to your children how much you love them?
  6. Do you think your children are clear that any punishment you mete out is based on love rather than on anger?
Spend Time in Prayer

Ask God to help you engage with your children in ways that let them know they're in your heart forever.

2 Corinthians 6:11-13; 7:2-4

6:11 Oh, dear Corinthian friends! We have spoken honestly with you, and our hearts are open to you. 12 There is no lack of love on our part, but you have withheld your love from us. 13 I am asking you to respond as if you were my own children. Open your hearts to us!

7:2 Please open your hearts to us. We have not done wrong to anyone, nor led anyone astray, nor taken advantage of anyone. 3 I'm not saying this to condemn you. I said before that you are in our hearts, and we live or die together with you. 4 I have the highest confidence in you, and I take great pride in you. You have greatly encouraged me and made me happy despite all our troubles.

0Prayer for the Week

Help me, Lord, to be a constant, consistent presence in the life of my children, nudging them toward a life that pleases You.
